Primary Purpose

This position supports "Essex, an Emmes Company". Essex is a biomedical informatics and health information technology-focused consultancy founded in 2009 and headquartered in Rockville, MD. The Essex team comprises experts with extensive experience in strategically developing and managing complex health and biomedical information programs for clients in the Federal Government, research academia, and private sectors.

This is a Staff Engineering role that will own and be a key driver of the technical vision and architecture of innovative solutions that drive better healthcare outcomes.

Responsibilities

Drive the design and development of technical solutions to the functional requirements of the application.Design and review software system architecture as well as technical solutions to the functional requirements of the application.Lead in refining engineering best practices and processes and be the go-to person to troubleshoot critical system issues.Optimize the software system to execute efficiently (e.g., execution time, memory usage, bandwidth, etc.).Write and be an advocate for well-tested and maintainable code leveraging unit, integration, and BDD tests, on the team.Develop and maintain a scalable, resilient, performant and accessible enterprise-level software system for the client, in a Google Cloud environment, using primarily JavaScript and vanilla JavaScript.Develop system documentation, including architecture diagrams, sequence diagrams, API documentation, and technical SOPs for the project.Manage individual task priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.Utilize Cloud Functions to implement RESTful APIs that integrate with a CloudFirestore backend.Work in a collaborative cross-functional team environment to move features (GitHub Issues) across all tiers.Assist junior staff with task-related or troubleshooting problems.Interview engineering candidate(s) and provide evaluation/recommendation to the hiring manager.Put together presentations and be able to present to a technical and non-technical audience. Meet with project stakeholders to discuss technical topics.Contribute engineering knowledge internally to the technical team (e.g., Essex Confluence, Presentation, Brown-Bag, Blog)Be a proactive part of the software engineering team, looking to make improvements to our engineering practice. Promote a culture of engineering excellence.Mentor junior staff on system architecture, software design, and engineering best practices and processes. Provide guidance on task-related or troubleshooting problems.Contribute to improving the engineering interview and evaluation process.Own and drive an in-house engineering project that is used for a business development activity or to improve the company's technical capabilities.Contribute to a company business development activity (e.g., providing content, reviewing proposal response).Qualifications

Excellent communication (oral and written) and collaboration skills.Experience working on multiple projects/initiatives.Experience coding in Javascript, Python, Java, Ruby, or comparable programming languages.Experience building software systems that run in the Google Cloud (GCP) or in-house virtualization environment.Experience with GCP cloud technologies such as API Gateway, Cloud Functions, PubSub, Google Buckets, Cloud Firestore, Spanner, BigTable, and BigQuery.Comprehensive understanding of HTML, CSS, and modern web standards.Experience developing software systems with a backing relational and/or NoSQL database.Experience developing microservice using RESTful APIs and other technologies to exchange data via JSON, XML, and other data interchange formats.Experience working in an Agile or LEAN development environment.Experience using source code control such as Git and GitHub.Experience with DevSecOps practices to rapidly deliver software quickly and reliably.Experience with container and orchestration technologies.10+ years of software development experience in one or more programming languages and with data structures/algorithms.Possession of a Bachelor or Graduate degree in a technical field such as Computer Science from an accredited college or university (according to CHEA).8-10 years of experience building enterprise software systems that run in a Production GCP Cloud environment.8 years of working with a CI/CD pipeline using Git, GitHub, and GitHub Actions(or similar tools).Cloud development or architect certification is a plus.Experience with AWS Cloud Platform (GCP) and Microsoft Azure is a plus.Why work at Emmes?
