Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Float Staff Nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) is a Registered Nurse who contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of the nursing regimen for assigned patients on his/her unit. Under the direction and leadership of the Head Nurse, or Assistant Director of Nursing the Staff Nurse is guided by a thorough knowledge of nursing theory, principles and standards of quality nursing care.
Responsibilities
Trauma Experience & Pediatric Emergency Experience Preferred.
Minimum of 1 year ED experience.
Able to flex between Adult and Pediatric ED environments depending on departmental need.

Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the direction and leadership of the Head Nurse, or Assistant Director of Nursing the Staff Nurse is guided by a thorough knowledge of nursing theory, principles and standards of quality nursing care.
Responsibilities
- Provides Nursing Care to assigned patients through assessment of patient's needs, making nursing diagnosis, developing and implementing a plan of care, which reflect an individualized mode of nursing intervention based on specific population guidelines.
- Initiates a Nursing Assessment and reflecting short-term goals, patient and/or significant other education and a discharge plan.
- Allows patient and/or significant other to participate in the plan if possible.
- Executes physician's orders with clear understanding of the scientific principles of cause and effect.
- Collaborates with the Head Nurse/Assistant Director of Nursing in assigning functions to ancillary personnel.
- Records pertinent observations of patient chart and reports verbally findings to the appropriate multidisciplinary team member using an approved hand off tool.
- Evaluates the result of nursing intervention and makes appropriate changes when necessary.
- Administers medication as ordered and chart according to hospital policy and professional standards.
- Count narcotics with in-coming and out-going tour nurses according to hospital policy/procedures.
- Educates patient and/or family and documents learner method, content and outcome.
- Adheres to Infection Control measures, Radiation Safety, Disaster Preparedness and the Safety Evaluation Plan.
- Attends educational programs offered by Staff Development or outside agencies, in order to maintain 50 hours of continuing education.
- Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary conferences pertaining to policies and procedures affecting patient care.
- Participates in Pl monitoring activities i.e., data collection.
- Communicates with Head Nurse or designee problems or issues affecting optimal patient care.
- Demonstrates competency in Patient Care, Code Management, and Trauma Response in both AES & PES.
- Can be rotated through RN assignments within the AES or PES based on unit needs and throughout the shift.
- Verbalizes importance of cultural sensitivity to diversity in the work force.
- Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury.
- Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events.
- Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately addressed.
- Explains, involves and instructs patient and families concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
- One (1) year of clinical nursing experience in the specialty area in which assigned to float; and
- Holds or obtains a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
