The Information Technology (IT) Department is a service and support department of the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ). WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position typically works 7.5 hours per day (Monday through Friday). Your scheduled shift will be determined at the time of hire, typically shift schedules will begin between 7:30am - 8:30am, end of shift timing will match accordingly between 4:00pm and 5:00pm. Your office is located in downtown Juneau in City Hall.
Typical Responsibilities
Routinely maintain awareness of network health monitoring for performance, stability, and/or outages. Works to troubleshoot and resolve issues when needed. Will develop baselines for reporting and for predicting future problems.
Installs, configures, and maintains physical infrastructure for CBJ WAN links. Provide assistance and guidance to the Network Specialist I in installing, configuring, and maintaining CBJ LAN links. Installs, configures, and maintains core network services on dedicated appliances as well as server hardware running Windows and Linux.
Monitors the availability and performance of core network services. Addresses outages or performance concerns. These services are, but not limited to, internal and external DNS namespaces, firewall (layer 3) and protocol screening (layer 4-7) protection of the network, layer 3 routing for LAN, WAN, and Internet resources, VPN services, and cyber threat detection and remediation. Responsible for maintaining monitoring systems on dedicated appliances as well as server hardware running Windows and Linux.
Performing primary administration of CBJ email systems, both on-premises and in O365. This includes the management of email user mailbox creation and maintenance, anti-spam filtering, backups, recovery, and e-discovery request reports. Will be the primary resource for end user email requests and the subject matter expert for CBJ email systems.
Provide support for Active Directory, ensures domain controllers are functioning efficiently. Will be the subject matter expert of our AD and user OU management. Will work with other CBJ IT staff in the maintenance, administration, and development of GPO's. Will work to answer general network help requests.
Install and maintain microwave radio communications gear. This involves work on towers or elevated work platforms, as well as occasional helicopter transportation to tower sites.
CBJ will fund tower climbing certification.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in information systems maintenance or support which includes the maintenance of network systems.
Substitution:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Computer Information Systems or related field will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. Graduate study in computer science may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience on the basis of two (2) semester hours (3 quarter hours) for each month of experience.

a current Alaska Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
