Role Overview:

The IHCDA Homeownership Department (HOD) seeks an individual who is willing to work on a tenured team of individuals who excel in creating homeownership opportunities in the State of Indiana. HOD creates and administers a variety of homeownership programs designed to assist potential homebuyers in achieving homeownership in the State of Indiana while focusing on IHCDA’s Mission and Vision.

The Underwriter (UW) position is the core of HOD and works under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager. The UW is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of mortgage loan files submitted daily by Participating Lenders (PLs). The PLs rely on prompt and professional responses in order to determine the correct course of action to ensure their clients can close on their new home as quick as possible. The UW assists in providing any support and training required by the PLs in understanding and utilizing the HOD programs.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $43,888.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

Answer questions relating to all aspects of the HOD with anyone (potential homebuyers, PLs, real estate agents, co-departments, etc.)

Assist in developing metrics to forecast, analyze, and track participation in HOD programs and the Indiana Housing Market

Assist in answering PL’s and potential homeowner’s questions by email and incoming phone calls

Assist in ancillary duties of HOD, including, DPA wires, posting of fees, data transmissions, pooling of loans, issuing directive letters, and anything else required in the daily operations of HOD

Collaborate on data collected to help develop or update homeownership programs

Collaborate on developing marketing strategies to reach more potential Hoosier homeowners

Ensure PLs receive any requested program training and information in a timely manner

Ensure the pipeline of loan applications is up to date by communicating regularly with the PLs

Help identify opportunities to create efficiencies in the HOD’s processes and procedures

Help identify opportunities that reduce barriers to low-income individuals participating in HOD homeownership programs

Assist in basic programming of the department’s software system

Promote and expand the knowledge of the HOD programs

Process opinions for lenders on problematic situations

Process incoming correspondence from lenders pertaining to deficiencies related to submissions

Underwrite submissions for homeownership

What You'll Need for Success:

Bachelor’s degree, with a concentration in one of the following areas: Marketing, Finance, Economics, or Accounting preferred

3 – 5 years experience working in Mortgage Finance, Accounting, or Computer Information Systems preferred

Able to think logically and analytically.

Able to be proactive in anticipating and alerting others to problems with system enhancements or new Homeownership Programs.

Able to prioritize, organize tasks and time, and follow up on assignments.

Able to work well in a team environment and as part of a team.

Able to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals with diverse backgrounds, education, and economic levels.

Able to analyze data and determine if a potential homebuyer qualifies for a HOD program.

Demonstrates proficiency in public speaking

Demonstrates strong presentation skills. Can facilitate both large and small group presentations. Comfortable with presenting and teaching information on the various Homeownership Programs.

Demonstrates a strong sense of customer service and commitment.

Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.

Takes initiative and needs little supervision.

Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Internet usage, and Windows operating systems.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
