Job/Position DescriptionNetwork Specialist IV - Under the direction of the IT Customer Support State Health - Austin Metro Manager, performs advanced professional and complex technical work managing the development, implementation, and maintenance of a Local Area Network (LAN) and/or Wide Area Network (WAN). May supervise staff or provides input to the performance of IT personnel. Work involves computer installation, testing, maintenance, monitoring and enhancement; training of operation staff; and the operation of a Helpdesk. Work is performed under general direction with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Essential Job Functions (60 %) Maintains the Local Area Network (LAN) and/or Wide Area Network (WAN), and other related duties. Maintains the network physical and logical structures, including all network connections. Monitors service and problem tickets in order to respond and resolve tickets within established SLA timeframes. Maintains the operating system and security software utilized on the network, including the addition of new users to the system and establishment of trustee rights and privileges. Liaison with facilities, and IT management to coordinate outages. Review network system plans for completeness and accuracy. Develop creation and updates for procedure manuals/documentation. Integrates LAN requirements into agencyand146;s information resources and business plans. Maintain the physical and logical structures of the LAN consisting of multiple servers and operating systems. Supports migration to new network operation system levels. Develops goals and objectives for the development of an efficient and cost-effective network. Determines operational, technical, and support requirements for the location, installation, operation, and maintenance of agency network systems. Evaluates technologies for acquisition and directs evaluations of various hardware and software resources, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and potential benefits to the office. Analyzes system procedures to ensure efficiency. Communicates with vendors, users, management, and network programming staff. Continues education and knowledge of new technology in the LAN/WAN environment through training and trade shows/magazines (35 %) May direct operation staff personnel and oversees their training. Train and supervise operations staff in the installation and maintenance of hardware and software. Train operations staff on policies and procedures for use. Directs the installations and testing of hardware and software, perform routine maintenance, and applies vendor updates to software as needed. Assure that LAN and WAN cable and hub installations and inventories are maintained. Assure that user support is conducted on a timely basis and in a courteous manner. Directs performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of network resources. Direct the performance of routine backups and archival of files stored on the network to assist in recovery efforts. Assists projects and/or sets projects priorities for immediate operations staff in accordance with managementand146;s current objectives. ( 5 %) Other duties as assigned Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agencyand146;s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
