Simpson College invites applications for the position of Assistant Vice President (AVP)/Controller. This position reports to the Vice President for Business and Finance and is primarily responsible for accounting and financial reporting activities.Duties and Responsibilities include:Financial statement preparation and financial reporting including general ledger maintenance, monthly reconciliations, and preparation and review of journal entries.Responsible for all aspects of the annual audit including preparation of GAAP financial statements and serving as liaison to the audit firm: preparation and filing of information returns (IRS 990 and 5500) and other external reporting and filing.Serves as Controller in accordance with established procedures; coordinates accounts payable and payroll postings to accounting system, coordinates revenue accounting, plant fund accounting, student financial assistance accounting, grant accounting, performs month end and year end accounting close procedures, prepares and reviews monthly accounting reports for accuracy; coordinates processing of accounting information.Supervises the accounting for general fixed assets; coordinates with input personnel to assure that all expenditures accounted for as capital outlay are included in the fixed assets inventory and recorded properly on the financial statements.Reviews monthly revenue and expenditures reports and general ledger to determine accuracy of postings, makes necessary journal entries to correct errors. Prepares and processes journal entries to correct and adjust account balances or to allocate costs properly upon feedback or need from staff or pursuant to routine accounting needs.Supervises the verification of expenditures for accounting accuracy and in compliance with policy guidelines. Supervises the monthly reconciliation of pooled cash records and bank statements.Assists with the preparation of the operating budget to include the forecasting and monitoring of cash flow requirements.Supervise accounting staff members and provide oversight of all accounting functions.Complete or generate required periodic reports for both internal and external use, including primary responsibilities for the preparation of financial records and related materials for external audit. Oversee the preparation of the monthly close and preparation of financial statements.With the assistance of the Assistant Controller, maintain investment accounts and documentation.Lead in developing, implementing, documenting, and monitoring accounting policies to continuously improve financial control systems.Oversee training for budget managers on policies and procedures for the preparation and oversight of departmental budgets.Problem solves for faculty, staff, and students on budgetary and related matters.Review disbursements for conformity per policy and procedures.Qualifications:BA in accounting and 5 – 10 years of progressive experience in accounting.CPA designation and advanced accounting skills.Ideally, experience in higher education.Knowledge or ability to learn Federal and State regulations pertaining to higher education.Experience in endowment and grant accounting to ensure the audit is completed on a timely basis.Experience working with external auditors.Experience preparing GAAP financial statements.Experience in documenting procedures and internal controls.Interested and skilled in process improvement.Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to transparency and serving others in a respectful manner.Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate key data, including presentations to senior management, board of trustees and others.Keen analytic, organization and critical thinking skills for strategic data interpretation.Ability to manage projects in an environment of competing priorities.Ability to maintain confidentiality.Ability and interest in assuming additional responsibilities.Computer Skills:Experience with or ability to learn the Ellucian product Colleague.Experience with or ability to learn software Prophix, Fundriver, and Slate.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.Ideally, experience in implementing accounting related software.
