Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for assisting New Mexico communities that are experiencing water scarcity issues with development and implementation of wastewater reuse projects to encourage safe reuse by providing technical and regulatory support including issuance of groundwater discharge permits.
How does it get done?
- Assist in the development of reuse guidance documents, policies, and drafting potable and non-potable wastewater reuse regulations - Ensure communities conduct all kinds of wastewater reuse projects in a safe and sustainable manner - Assess appropriate actions for assisting communities with reuse projects, operations and closure of domestic, industrial and wastewater reuse facilities, and whether those facilities are in compliance with their discharge permits - Review discharge permit applications and treatment facility operations and closure plans - Inspect facilities - Oversee corrective actions and abatement plans - Maintain organized and regularly updated paper and electronic files for each assigned discharge permit and abatement plan
Who are the customers?
- New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment - Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations - Internal staff
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following: - Regulatory oversight - Providing critical review and written comment on technical water resources documents - Project management - Communicating effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science Emergency Management or Engineering and two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. In-state travel, including some overnight travel is required. Outdoor field work is required in all types of weather conditions.
