This is a temporary, part-time, at-will classification in the Police Department. Temporary employees typically work less than twenty-eight (28) hours per week, not to exceed 990 hours in a fiscal year (July 1st through June 30th). Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits, excluding those benefits prescribed by law.
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, receives, organizes, preserves, secures, transports, and releases property and evidence; destroys hazardous material and narcotics no longer scheduled for use as evidence; testifies in court regarding chain of custody of evidence; prepares complex legal paperwork; and performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from an assigned Police Sergeant. May provide training to lower-level staff and/or volunteers.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis is the journey-level non-sworn classification in the Evidence and Property Technician class series. Under general supervision, incumbents work independently, and exercise judgment and initiative. Incumbents at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to the following:Receives, tags, and stores property and/or evidence from crime scenes.Prepares narcotics for analysis by the Department of Justice and county crime labs.Transports narcotics to the Department of Justice and/or county crime lab for analysis; destroys narcotics according to legal and administrative procedures and practices.Researches case disposition and case files to determine rightful owner of property.Completes Department of Justice checks on individuals who claim weapons.Obtains court orders for the destruction or return of property.Releases property to others when appropriate.Testifies in court regarding the chain of evidence.Prepares body worn camera and in-car camera requests and subpoenas for the Department and District Attorney's Office.Enters data on property and/or evidence into the property system.Transports and stores bio-hazardous material/chemicals; coordinates pick-ups for the destruction and disposal of bio-hazardous material.Purchases, catalogs, orders, and stores department equipment and supplies, as necessary.QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited educational institution, with major coursework in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or a closely related field;
AND
Two (2) years of full-time experience performing increasingly responsible property evidence duties equivalent to the City's classification of Assistant Evidence and Property Technician.
Licenses and Certifications
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class C Driver License and a satisfactory driving record is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
