General Position Summary/Job Scope This position will be responsible for the identification and technical analysis of energy savings opportunities and Building Performance Optimization Studies. The Energy Engineer is also responsible for technical aid to current clients in developing overall projects in a strategic manner. Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities • Perform energy cost savings calculations using hand calculations, spreadsheets, and modeling software. • Perform preliminary and detailed technical energy audits using software tools available from DOE such as MEASUR & ENERGY STAR in a wide range of facilities. Find facility improvement measures (FIM’s) related to a building’s infrastructure including electrical, mechanical, control, water, wastewater, envelope, solid waste, irrigation, and lighting systems. • Decide operational characteristics of a building and find improvement areas by reviewing sequence of operations and interviewing staff. • Supply detailed analysis of utility bill data including benchmarking the data against similar facilities. Benchmarking methods include Energy Star Portfolio Management, DCIE, PUE and other industry standards. • Work with utility providers to secure rebates for audits and FIM implementation. • Supply written documentation of FIM’s, including exact scope descriptions, equipment specification, energy savings potential, benefits, and backup data to verify Facility Improvement Measures. • Collaborate with Associates about specific project tasks to achieve goals and meet deadlines compared to assigned projects. • Ensure that field logging and measurement of equipment to assess the current performance are performed correctly. • Coordinate facility site visits and communicate with outside vendors as pertains to the identification of engineering support. • Develop preliminary and final energy savings proposals, studies, meetings, and presentations. • Oversee the monitoring and on-going performance assurance of energy savings projects as directed. • Perform schematic design for building mechanical, electrical systems including drawings and layout, written design narrative, and sizing calculations. Secondary Functions • Stay informed on changes within the energy industry and be an active participant in related professional associations. • Keep good understanding of pertinent building and energy codes. • Keep harmonious relations with building owners, contractors, consultants, vendors, and other partners. • Keep informed on and follow client processes and standards. • Must be willing to travel when needed. Greater than 50% travel will be required the first 2 years. • Must be able to climb ladders, be on your feet most of the day touring facilities. • Will support Mobilizations as requested and approved by the VP, interviewing Hard Services Technicians, deploying programs and procedures as needed and represent as a Hard Services SME. Essential Attributes • Chilled water system control optimization. • Comprehensive understanding in building thermal imagining and building utilities usage. • HVAC control and optimization. • Understanding of multiple building automation systems & retro-commissioning platforms. • Full understanding of all ENERGY STAR programs related to energy benchmarking, energy efficiency & greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions & carbon footprint calculations per EPA protocols. • Comprehensive understanding of electrical grids, cost, electrical offsets, renewable energy certificates, rebate programs, and projects to reduce client facility cost while improving facility optimizations. Specific Job Skills • Proficient with computers and web related technologies. • MS Excel and MS Word skills. • Keep good understanding of pertinent building and energy codes. • Prove effective communication skills. • Show the ability to multi-task and meet project deadlines. • Excellent technical writing skills. • Installing data logging equipment in interpreting results. Education and/or Experience: • Four-year degree in Energy Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. • 5yrs experience in related field and/or energy related field is needed. • Experience in the ASHRAE type of energy audits: Levels 1 & 2 and other critical environments are needed. • Certified Energy Manager or equivalent certification is preferred. • Demonstrated experience in the following electrical systems; PF (Power Factor) correction, harmonic distortion, load profile analysis, electric motors & VFDs. • Sustainability or equivalent qualification (for example, Lean/Green Six Sigma) is preferred.
