Occ Summary Perform general painting tasks, including mixing colors, stains, and coatings, and handling small repairs of sheetrock and plaster in University facilities. Direct lower-level personnel as needed. Work Performed Assist painters with assigned tasks and perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Read blueprints and follow specifications for painting projects. Use riggings, hoists, ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other equipment used in painting tasks. Repair and finish drywall to prepare surfaces for painting. Properly use, care for, and maintain equipment used in the painting trade. Safely operate hand and power tools. Erect scaffolding, ladders, and lifts while following safety procedures. Apply protective coverings to adjacent surfaces before spray painting. Select and use appropriate brushes, rollers, pads, mitts, and other accessories for applying paint. Correctly store and maintain brushes, rollers, and other painting tools. Calculate scaffold loads, area loads, live loads, concentrated loads, and cantilevered loads. Safely operate and maintain paint equipment. Use appropriate tools, materials, and methods for preparing surfaces for paint, coatings, or sealants. Identify and apply different types of sealants and filters to construction substrates. Safely use sandblasting equipment. Identify and analyze failures of paints and coatings on exterior and interior substrates and determine remedies for these failures. Apply various clear finishes to surfaces. Recognize and correct paint and coating failures caused by improper preparation and application of coatings. Recognize and address coating discoloration issues. Use proper procedures for mixing, tinting, and matching paint colors. Utilize a color wheel, the Munsell system, Federal Standard 595B, and other color matching tools. Follow correct methods to limit dust, debris, and hazardous materials from contaminating the environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in mixing and applying paints and coatings, including proper surface preparation and safety procedures. Ability to read and follow blueprints and technical specifications. Strong knowledge of scaffolding, ladders, and lift safety procedures. Skill in identifying and remedying paint and coating failures. Ability to use and maintain painting tools and equipment. Minimum Qualifications Education Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades training, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. Completed forklift training. Experience Completed Level 6, Painter II program requirements or have 4 years OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE experience in painter trade and is able to pass all required tests for Level 7, Senior I painter.
