ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF PHILADELHIA TITLE: PAINTER II DEPARTMENT: ENGINEERING CLASSIFICATION: FULL-TIME REGULAR (UNION) DESCRIPTION: Under the general direction of the Engineering Superintendent and the immediate supervision of the Engineering Manager performs routine preventive and corrective painting or surface coating on the Zoo's physical plant surfaces and fixtures and other maintenance duties of a general nature as may be required or assigned. Ensures that all painting work complies with applicable codes and with established performance standards. May work with other Engineers on projects as needed. Anticipates the safety requirements for painting jobs and follows safety rules and standards. Complies with organizational and departmental policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Develop and implement a system of routine surface coating maintenance for the Zoo's physical plant that incorporates a preventive painting plan. Maintain technical equipment for the job ensuring that all tools and equipment are clean and in good working order. Maintains a wide array of painting tools including thick and thin brushes, airbrushes and rollers. Using viscosity cups and thickness gauges to measure the amount of paint to be used and the texture of the paint. Perform all painting/coating surface duties in accordance with established trade procedures, this includes drywall and other surface repair and preparation. Prepare surfaces for treatment by removing previous paint surfaces using mechanical methods or a chemical rinse and cleaning surfaces prior to applying paint. Apply specialty paints such as one- and two-part epoxies, coatings and finishes. Utilizes different painting techniques based on the nature of the surface and material. Ensure high safety standards are met, including properly disposing of chemical waste and using air scrubbers and fans to ensure proper ventilation during and after paint is applied. Provide a high level of internal customer service making sure to prepare areas to be painted with drop cloths and insure areas are clean when finished. Responsible for providing Storesperson with order requests in a timely fashion and keeping an adequate stock of paint related materials so that there is no delay in waiting for supplies. Must have high degree of attention to detail. Follow all safety procedures and use safety equipment as required. Use personal protective equipment as required. Keep informed of new developments, techniques and materials in the trade. Work with the Animal Health department to ensure safe levels of VOC's in animal areas. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by management in emergencies, may be assigned to assist or perform a task or project in another trade. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIRED: High school degree or equivalent and four years experience in the trade; experience in an industrial setting preferred. Ability to work methodically and effectively with minimal supervision and cooperatively with co-workers, supervisors, other departments and outside contractors. Demonstrated knowledge of the field including industry standards and codes, practices, methods, techniques, tools, equipment, materials hazards and safety precautions. Demonstrated ability to accurately estimate supplies and materials required. Experience in a variety of surfaces, surface preps and techniques, including wood, metal, concrete, drywall and plaster. Demonstrated ability to work quickly with a high degree of quality and cleanliness. Able to work from ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts and scissors lifts Internal candidates must have a work record, which demonstrates painting experience in a commercial setting and track record of teamwork and consistent compliance with Zoo and department policies and work standards. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operators license and good driving record. Able to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends, evenings and holidays. PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor. Successful completion of post-offer medical screening and drug test with emphasis on cardiovascular, respiratory and skeletal systems prior to beginning work. No allergies related to plants or animals, which may interfere with the ability to work. No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work. Ability to safely lift and carry 40 pounds a distance of 50 feet. Ability to work from heights and/or in confined spaces; ability to climb and work from ladders. Ability to work outside in all weather conditions. Immunocompetence. Possible exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species and potentially dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs. Occasional use of protective clothing or safety equipment is required such as, but not limited to, goggles, masks, gloves, braces, helmets and gowns, etc. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 1.
