Energy Specialist with a focus on Power Systems Modeling
in our Boston, MA. office.
SUBJECT MATTER THE ELECTRICITY GROUP ADDRESSES We help our clients address the most important economic issues facing the electricity sector of the future, in the context of regulatory proceedings, business planning, and litigation, where we are renowned for the highest quality, most objective work. Topics include: how to meet electricity needs and environmental objectives efficiently and reliably through wholesale electricity market design, transmission planning, renewable energy procurements, enhanced utility resource planning, and integration of distributed energy resources and load flexibility; developing and evaluating clean energy policy instruments; facilitating electrification of transportation and other sectors; developing innovative utility business models to enable distributed energy resources, load flexibility, electrification, and efficiency; modernizing retail rates, including dynamic rates and performance-based rates; establishing risk management strategies against increased exposures to extreme stress; and determining the costs to provide electric service and appropriate rates of return for regulated assets.
NATURE OF OUR WORK Client assignments involve a combination of listening to client needs and formulating into problem statements, and conceptualizing analytical approaches; conducting research, quantitative analysis, and modeling of industry data; applying finance and economic theory; developing innovative approaches; reviewing and refining work to the highest quality standard; communicating findings clearly through presentations and written work products. Our work is frequently submitted as expert analysis and testimony in regulatory proceedings and disputes.
ENERGY SPECIALIST The Brattle Group is seeking an
Energy Specialist with a focus on Power Systems Modeling.
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual with strong quantitative skills to supervise and conduct electricity systems and market modeling. This person will take a lead analytical role in developing, improving, and overseeing modeling infrastructure, as well as developing leading-edge model features and executing modeling projects. As a part of this role, this person will receive project management training and will eventually oversee modeling teams.
TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS As an Energy Specialist, typical assignments may include:
Using nodal electricity market and/or expansion planning modeling software to:
Formulate policy or market design options for achieving decarbonization policy goals
Uncover challenges with and solutions for transitioning to a cleaner electricity system dominated by renewables, storage, and engaged customers
Analyze the reliability and economics of cutting-edge system flexibility products
Conduct assessments for integrated resource plans and making policy recommendations
Quantify the benefits of wholesale electricity markets and transmission projects
Developing custom software tools and harnessing database automation to improve the efficiency of model development and results analysis
THE CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will possess:
A graduate degree in a quantitative discipline
(e.g. power systems engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, statistics) with strong academic performance and applied research in power systems and modeling
OR
An undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline
with two years of job experience in power systems and markets modeling
Additionally, we look for candidates with:
A desire to work in a collaborative team environment
– Our project work is done almost exclusively on teams and it is critical to work well with others
Direct experience conducting electricity market modeling – Commercial platforms such as Enelytix/PSO, Plexos, Promod, GridView, or others
Market knowledge – Knowledge and experience with US electricity markets, wholesale market operators, energy and ancillary service market designs, and/or economic and policy issues in the electricity sector
Fluency in one or more programming languages – Python, R, Java, or others
Experience working with large data sets – Building and using databases, including query development and automation; familiarity with advanced data analytics, statistics, machine learning, and other expertise areas demonstrating exceptional quantitative and data skills.
Experience working with or developing dynamic data visualization platforms for large data sets – using tools such as Power BI
Strong familiarity with general modeling platforms and solvers – Building general optimization models using commercial platforms (e.g., GAMS, AIMMS, CPLEX)
