Summary: The individual selected for this part-time position (20% FTE) will work with the staff of the Division of Advocacy and Health Policy and other staff throughout the College. Responsibilities of this position will include but are not limited to engaging Fellows in advocacy initiatives, drafting health policy and advocacy articles, and presenting to surgeon audiences regarding advocacy and health policy issues. Will lead the coordination and development of practice management resources to assist Fellows with the business aspects of their practices. This exempt position will report to the Director in the Division of Advocacy and Health Policy. It will be based out of our Washington, D.C. office, and only Fellows of the American College of Surgeons will be considered for this position. The starting salary range is $120,000 - $145,000 (.20 FTE, and commensurate with related experience).

Responsibilities:

  • Take a leadership role in implementing tactics to increase engagement of Fellows in ACS grassroots activities including but not limited to ACS Surgeons Voice, ACS state initiatives, ACSPA-Surgeons PAC, and the annual ACS Advocacy Summit.
  • Oversee the production or outsourcing of educational courses beneficial to Fellows of ACS in management of surgical practices (coding seminars, fraud and abuse seminars, practice management courses, and others).
  • Develop staff and support a committee of voluntary Fellows who facilitate the workings and direction of the development of practice management resources by the ACS.
  • Contribute regular content to ACS publications and other scholarly journals including, but not limited to, the Bulletin, Advocacy Brief, Bulletin Brief, and more in-depth resources such as primers.
  • Serve as a staff resource for all Advocacy and Health Policy programs.

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Must be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
  • Prior experience with Advocacy and Health Policy essential functions highly desired.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse population required.
