About the role:
KalVista seeks a dynamic and experienced Senior Vice President, Corporate Development to expand, enhance and lead our business and corporate development functions. In this critical role, you will be an integral contributor to the strategic development and long-term success of KalVista. Key responsibilities include sourcing, evaluating, prioritizing, executing and the overall management of both internally- and externally derived value creation opportunities.
Reporting to the CEO, you will lead cross-functional teams in rigorous scientific and business due diligence, while acting as a key thought partner to the broader leadership team on a range of strategic and operational matters related to KalVista’s current and future projects and their role in advancing our development and delivery of novel medicines for diseases with significant unmet need.
Responsibilities:
Work closely with the Executive Leadership Team to formulate and execute the company's corporate vision, strategy and business plan
Design, plan, and implement business development strategies to achieve the corporate vision and growth of the company
Leverage your own and others’ networks to identify, evaluate and acquire proprietary assets that support the strategy and objectives of the company
Lead the organization through the analysis, negotiation, execution and integration of program and asset acquisitions, business partnerships and licensing agreements
Run partnership discussion processes including direct ownership and oversight of due diligence, drafting and negotiating term sheets, working closely with the legal team and outside counsel on negotiating collaboration agreements, and ensuring internal visibility, input, and alignment
Lead portfolio strategy efforts which include disease area planning, business development opportunity assessment, and both internal and external program assessment and valuation
Lead out-licensing initiatives to identify potential partners for select programs that would be more rapidly or effectively advanced via partnership
Oversee and drive cross-functional teams to execute business development initiatives and achieve established goals
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including potential partners and industry experts
Work closely with internal colleagues and external experts, including investment bankers, and oversee the creation and evolution of financial models that inform the valuation of opportunities
Develop and manage budgets and financial forecasts for business development initiatives
Monitor and analyze market trends and competitive landscape to inform business development strategies and decisions
Provide regular updates and reports to senior leadership on corporate development activities and progress towards goals
Act as an ambassador for KalVista at external meetings, conferences and seminars in order to access new opportunities and build and expand external networks
Qualifications:
15+ years of experience including at least 10 years of experience in business development, including scientific due diligence and transaction experience across BD is required
Advanced medical and/or scientific degree (MD, Ph.D., or both) or equivalent practical experience is required; MBA/MSC preferred
A thorough understanding of the processes of due diligence, asset valuation (including financial models, statements and SEC reporting), and portfolio management, combined with deep scientific and business acumen
Successful track record in independently sourcing, evaluating, prioritizing, pursuing and onboarding high-value clinical-stage assets, preclinical assets and research platforms
Strong capabilities in scientific and strategic analysis and communication
Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, with proven ability to influence across management levels, functions, and organizations
Highly networked individual within the venture and biotech ecosystems, global experience a plus
Self-starter, comfortable working with limited direction in a fast-paced environment
