Salary
The anticipated salary hiring range is up to
$14,167
per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is
$9,625 to $30,896
per month.
Position Information
The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an
Executive Director, Tribal Relations
to facilitate engagement with Native American tribes and associated government entities to build strong Tribal partnerships, ensure compliance with state and federal laws, and conduct government-to-government tribal relations.
The ED Tribal Relations will lead and develop the Office of Tribal Relations, an office within the Division of External Relations and Communications. The ED will represent the Chancellor in government-to-government relationships, lead NAGPRA compliance, and support academic programs to enhance relationships between the CSU and Tribal communities.
Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the
Vice Chancellor, External Relations and Communications , the
Executive Director, Tribal Relations
will:
Develop the Office of Tribal Relations and provide leadership and strategic direction for the Tribal Relations team.
Provide advice and updates to system leaders regarding Native American Tribal issues.
Develop and recommend strategies to achieve system goals related to Tribal matters.
Lead collaborative efforts with various departments to support Tribal relationships.
Cultivate relationships with Tribal leaders and Native American organizations.
Oversee the systemwide NAGPRA policy and ensure compliance.
Work with various AVCs on legislative and budget matters related to Tribal issues.
Provide training and support for campus-based Tribal relations staff.
Testify at legislative hearings on issues related to Native American Tribes.
Travel to meet with Tribal leaders and organizations.
Supervise the NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA Project Manager.
Work with the Division of Academic and Student Affairs to advance academic programs related to Native American students.
Draft communications regarding Tribal partnerships and issues.
Engage the Office of the General Counsel on legal matters related to Tribes.
Qualifications
This position requires:
Bachelor’s degree in a related area.
Minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible related experience in Native American governance or related field.
Demonstrated experience working with Tribal communities.
Proven ability to lead teams.
Knowledge of California Native American heritage.
Understanding of NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA legal requirements.
Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of Tribal law and governance.
Proven ability to work with Tribal, government, and community leaders.
Understanding of Tribal protocols.
Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from varied backgrounds.
Strong organizational and strategic skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related area.
Experience with institutions of higher education.
