Position Summary:
The Executive Director of Innovation oversees all programs and operations of the UC Russell and Martha Wehrle Innovation Center located on the Charleston campus, and the UC Downtown Innovation Hub located at 240 Capitol Street. The primary responsibilities are facilitating innovation efforts that impact faculty, staff, and students, and supporting area small and medium size business growth. Reporting directly to the President of the University, the Executive Director works closely with three full-time staff members: the Director of the Innovation Center, the Program Director of the Downtown Innovation Hub, and the Program Manager who supports both locations. This is a full-time position that requires daily on-location presence at the Downtown Innovation Hub and frequent travel to the Charleston campus.
Essential Responsibilities:
Oversee all innovation-related initiatives, campus and community-wide
Direct the Downtown Innovation Hub and lead program development and delivery
Support the campus Innovation Center and the Innovation Scholars program
Design and lead workshops for small and medium-sized businesses and students
Lead, coach, mentor, and evaluate professional staff as well as graduate assistants and interns
Coordinate, with the Vice President of Development, the UC Downtown Innovation Hub Advisory Council
Manage innovation-related grant and donor activities and associated reporting
Recommend and support UC schools, programs, and other units’ innovation initiatives
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Earned graduate degree in a business, education, or leadership-related field
Five years of teaching, training, or other learning delivery activities
Ownership, operation, and growth of small-to-medium-size businesses
Experience coaching small-medium size businesses and organizations; coaching certification a plus
Familiarity with innovation theory and practice, including Certified Innovation Professional and Global Innovation Management Institute methodologies
Highly motivated self-starter who works well in a collaborative environment
Ability to analyze and solve problems
Ability to mentor and manage projects effectively
Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively
Demonstrated understanding of how entrepreneurship and innovation activities serve to strengthen and grow West Virginia’s economy
Knowledge of social media strategies
Design-thinking and innovation mindset
