Job Overview:

KIPP Atlanta Schools is seeking a Director of Analytics to lead data architecture and management, analysis and reporting initiatives, and a team of analysts. The Director of Analytics will develop and manage the regional data warehouse and its connections to our in-house business intelligence tool, which our schools use to gain powerful insight from data. The Director of Analytics will also oversee the analysis and reporting on school-level and regional data from various sources (e.g., academic, operations, demographic, etc.) pertinent to the regional strategic plan. The ideal candidate will have a passion for improving the flow of data through our data infrastructure from source system, to storage solution, to insights and dashboards that ultimately end up back in our stakeholders hands. The Director of Analytics will establish a team of analysts to serve as the analytic hub for the region by providing data, analysis, and research to support progress monitoring, planning, and decision-making at the regional and school levels. This individual will lead the development of data tools and capacity building to support the regions goals.

The Director of Analytics must be as much a people person as a numbers person; collaboration, cross-functional problem solving and managing a dynamic team requires thoughtful and deliberate leadership in this role. The Director of Analytics will support implementation of organizational data strategies around driving decision-making and instructional practices through analyses and capacity building. The Director of Analytics will report directly to the Managing Director of Data and Analytics and work closely with a variety of stakeholders, including school-based staff and members of the regional, shared services team.

Job Responsibilities:

Data Management and Infrastructure

Collaborate with Managing Director of Data and Analytics to create a long-term strategy and vision for a full data warehouse and infrastructure (data model development, ETL custom work, software tools, and documentation strategy), expanding the data domains held in the warehouse to other departments (e.g., Operations, Talent, Finance, etc.); this is inclusive of individually executing on this work, as well as coaching teammates on the best practice.

Develop, test, and maintain database architectures to ensure data integrity standards are met.

Define and implement necessary processes to consolidate and extract data from disparate sources (via API, ODBC, flat files, etc.)

Maintain and troubleshoot the integrity of data linkages between data source systems and data warehouse.

Develop and maintain documentation such as a data dictionary which describes the contents, formats, and structure of the data warehouse and the relationship between its elements.

Perform maintenance and support tasks on the central reporting platform, SOAR (WordPress).

Identifying, designing, and implementing internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

Partner with regional and school operations staff to conduct data quality audits to ensure accurate and complete data is warehoused through student information and other data systems. Resolve data quality issues in partnership with colleagues.

Advocate/escalate system issues to vendor support teams and follow-up on solutions.

Manage the relationship and necessary budget for data infrastructure as it grows.

Data Analysis, Application, and Action

Design, implement, and monitor the use of real-time data reports and dashboards (e.g., Tableau reports) to support strategic decisions at the regional and school-level. Seek feedback from teammates and end users to improve the product. Provide training and coaching on using reports and dashboards.

Collaborate with the broader Data Team to define regional data analysis and reporting plan and deliverables, school-facing data supports, and norm on data practices.

Conduct descriptive analysis on outputs from KIPP Atlanta's student information system, student assessments, teacher evaluations, and other organizational data platforms.

Develop predictive and statistical models with student data to support the academics, operations, and student support teams in allocating resources efficiently and making informed programmatic decisions.

Support other teams as necessary (e.g., talent, finance) to determine additional database, programming, and data visualization needs that can support the overall priorities of KIPP Atlanta.

Translate data into relevant insights and implications and support stakeholders on interpreting findings. Tailor the complexity of analysis appropriately to audiences with various data literacy skills (e.g., regional team, principals, teachers, Board members, funders, etc.) Anticipate and empathize with stakeholder reactions.

Regularly monitor key metrics and report significant changes or trends.

Develop and maintain documentation of data analysis and synthesis methods and processes.

Maintain an in-depth knowledge of all regionally standardized data sources and systems, being constantly aware of new updates and incorporating changes into analytical approach and data visualizations.

Data Strategy

Managing Director of Data and Analytics, sets vision for analytics, research and evaluation for short- and near-term work.

With input from key stakeholders, maintains reporting road map and ensures work between the data systems team (under Operations) and the Analytics team is collaborative.

Collaborate with the Managing Director of Data and Analytics and various stakeholders on key metric identification and ensure adequate collection of data and feasibility of analysis. Suggest new lines of analysis and work with colleagues to investigate them.

Creates an ambitious, yet feasible, plan for ensuring that the organization's data infrastructure supports the tools needed to effectively monitor student, school, and organizational progress towards key goals and priorities identified by the regional leadership and data teams.

Build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders in order to encourage questions and surface opportunities to provide support.

Seek opportunities to increase stakeholder ability to use data. Help to plan for and lead the training of school and regional staff on using data systems and interpreting data reports.

Work with teammates to analyze current and future data needs of teams and departments.

Manage stakeholder expectations around data availability for regional rollups and comparisons.

Leadership/Management

Lead, coach, and develop team of 2-3 Data Analysts, including strategically dividing the analytics and data management work between the team. Establish a team culture and systems for collaboration with this newly formed team.

Ensure that the Data & Analytics Team is providing high levels of customer service and high quality products and tools to internal and external stakeholders.

Supports analysts in communicating insights, trends, and tools and recommending next steps.

Assist with mentoring school and organizational leaders on using data to improve instructional planning and drive student achievement.

Serve as expert and contributing member of cross-functional teams on topics such as: best practices for collecting and storing data, research design, using data insights to drive planning and decision-making, turning data into impactful stories, etc.

Job Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree is required; advanced degree in business, education, public administration/policy, or related field preferred.

Minimum 7+ years professional work experience in field/function, ideally in a charter school or other K-12 education organization, or transferable experience from another private or public sector organization.

Minimum 3+ years of managerial experience; management of analytics teams preferred.

Strong project and product management skills.

Robust quantitative and analytical skills, including experience working with large data sets to derive insights.

Expertise in relational database concepts, structures, and management.

Experience with data visualization and dashboard creation tools (i.e., Tableau).

Experience training and communicating data and analytics products to audiences of varying levels of expertise.

Experience programming in data analysis languages and/or software (e.g., SQL, R, Stata, SPSS).

In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word); advanced skills with Excel.

Enthusiasm for data, analytics, and data-driven decision making.

Knowledge of the education field, including familiarity with current student data systems (e.g., student information systems such as Infinite Campus and/or eSchoolPlus, assessment platforms such as Illuminate Education and NWEA MAP, behavior platforms such as Kickboard and LiveSchool, etc.) and relevant data sets (e.g., demographics, student achievement data, attendance/behavior, etc.).

Compensation & Benefits:

Compensation for this role is between $85,000 - $100,000. The starting pay will depend on various factors that may include but are not limited to professional experience, education, training, and certifications.

Location & Work Conditions:

This position requires candidates to be based in Atlanta and regularly be in schools and able to attend in person meetings and events. Occasional local travel between KIPP Atlanta school sites is required.
