DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, security officers perform work involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of state laws and city ordinances as they apply to The Bellevue Collection, and the interests of Kemper Development Company, and its properties. Security work also involves the maintenance of order, the investigation of crime and related tasks as directed. The security officer must display a positive attitude toward duties involving security and security related matters.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK:

Employees in this classification perform operating level security duties as licensed security officers on a 24‐hour‐a‐day, 7‐day‐a‐week basis. (Attendance is a significant consideration in this job classification.)

Work varies, but is generally governed by department rules, regulations, and operating procedures, with job performance reviewed regularly by shift supervisors. Security officers are expected to act with a great deal of independence and initiative in the daily performance of their duties, continuously demonstrating and maintaining proficiency in all security related tasks. Officers will be tested on their knowledge and asked to demonstrate certain skills at regular intervals.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

Within assigned areas, this position requires the following. Other duties will be assigned as needed.

  • Ability to read, understand and interpret rules and regulations, including safety regulations.
  • Ability to follow and abide by all rules and regulations as stated in Kemper Development Company security manuals defining conduct and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and execute written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to perform security checks as required, keeping accurate logs and times for these checks.

  • Make regular inspection tours of an assigned area or building; punches time clock at established intervals; watches for prowlers, fire, water leaks, or other unusual occurrences which may lead to loss or damage to property and equipment. (Will often be on your feet for several hours at a time.)
  • Record actual times physical checks are made in notebook, transferring this information to a daily report with accurate and legible notations of observations, actions taken, etc.
  • Walk up and down stairs, climb ladders checking security and status of doors and fire suppression and alarm equipment
  • Administer first aid/CPR in emergency situations after completion of training.
  • Detain people for criminal conduct, acting within state statutes regarding the use of force and department policies and procedures after completion of training
  • Take tickets, passes, check name tags against authorization list(s), issue name tags, guard equipment, and control access to various points within the project.
  • Sit for long periods of time while maintaining alertness and attention to assignment.
  • Talk on two‐way radio in calm, clear voice, making it possible for others to understand your situation or circumstances.
  • Give directions to people visiting The Bellevue Collection and assist with good will for the projects.
  • Talk with individuals who are upset and calm emotionally charged situations.
  • Lift approximately 80 lbs. Fires within the building would more likely than not require security officers to assist with evacuation. The disabled, or those overcome by smoke, may need assistance in getting to areas of safety within the building. This process would require sufficient strength to lift approximately 80 lbs.
  • Run in response to emergency situations on the project(s).
  • Stand for long periods of time guarding equipment, preventing access, etc.
  • Use the computer to type daily reports covering shift activities, and documentation of all incidents coming to your attention or assigned by supervisor.
  • Performs incidental custodial and maintenance duties.
  • Assists and directs visitors; furnishes information in a courteous manner; directs traffic and enforces vehicle regulations.
  • Insures that inside and outside lights are on or off as required; turns off coffee makers or other such equipment left on after tenants have departed for the day.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & REQUIREMENTS:

Security work involves walking, running, talking, hearing, smelling, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Periodically, the Security Officer will be required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Normal color vision is required as well as close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, night vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. (Hearing is critical to success in this job classification.)

The employee must be able to enter and exit vehicles quickly while wearing approximately 10 pounds of equipment. In response to crimes in progress, fire alarms, medical emergencies, etc., the employee must be able to run. Manual dexterity, coupled with good hand and arm strength is required to use traffic control.

Security Officers will be exposed to extreme weather conditions such as: heat, cold, rain and at times, potentially dangerous environments, diseases, chemicals, and excessive noise.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED and proof thereof.
  • Minimum 1 year of customer service experience preferred.
  • All security officers must be18 years of age at the time of employment.
  • Proficiency in English reading, writing and verbal communication skills are required.
  • The officer must possess qualities of integrity, loyalty, endurance, and judgment.
  • Must be able to obtain a Washington State Private Security License.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a Washington State Driver’s License with no major or continuing driving offenses that demonstrate a lack of concern for safety for the last 5 years.
  • Ability to communicate using a 2-way radio.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to walk and stand on your feet for long periods.
  • Comfortable working overtime and under any weather conditions.
  • Any felony or misdemeanor convictions in the areas of theft, assault, extreme recklessness, or moral turpitude will more likely than not, prevent employment under RCW 18.170.

NOTE: This position is considered a safety sensitive position for which impairment while working presents a substantial risk of death under the Washington State Law. Therefore, successful candidates will be required to pass a satisfactory background check and a drug screen (including cannabis).

Pay

$23.50 per hr. Day or Swing Shift

$24.50 per hr. Overnight
