Distinguishing Characteristics of work and essential attributes

Employees in this classification perform commercial painting duties across all properties in the KDC portfolio. The Painter is expected to act with a great deal of independence and initiative in daily performance of his/her duties, continuously demonstrating and maintaining proficiency in all Repair and Maintenance related tasks. The Painter will be tested on his/her knowledge and be asked to demonstrate certain skills at regular intervals. English reading /writing skills and verbal communication skills are required.

Required knowledge abilities and skills

The Overnight Painter is responsible for mixing, matching, and applying paint to various surfaces, completing touchups, and coordinating large painting projects. While this position is primarily a hands-on job, the person in this position is also responsible for developing, implementing and documenting operational best practices. The Overnight Painter must possess the following skills and specifications:

Essential functions and duties

Within assigned areas, this position requires the following. Other duties will be assigned as needed.


  • Apply paint to surfaces including canvas, walls, floors, and doors.
  • Mix, match, and apply paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, and other finishes.
  • Scrape, sandpaper, prime, or seal surfaces prior to painting.
  • Clean walls to ensure proper adherence.
  • Cover surfaces with cloth or plastic to ensure protection.
  • Calculate amounts of required materials for painting projects.
  • Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
  • Minor sheetrock repair as needed.
  • Erect scaffolding, movable and immovable staging and various rigging to gain access to difficult areas; move furniture and equipment as necessary.
  • Remove fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.
  • Apply several coats according to paint directions.
  • Tape off areas when needed.
  • Apply touchups or second coats.
  • Remove paint splatters when finished.
  • Clean up all equipment, including brushes and spray guns.
  • Utilize spray guns for large jobs.
  • Work on ladders to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Communicates and fosters teamwork with other Kemper Departments to ensure agreements are successfully managed, opportunities are maximized, and customer’s expectations are exceeded.

Environmental factors/physical demands:

  • Due to the nature of this work, candidates with 100% loss of sight, hearing ability, or with major speech impediments will not be considered. Eligibility determination of candidates with a less severe disability will be made on an individual basis.
  • Incumbents must be able to function under stress and be able to work odd hours when required or needed.
  • Work involves running to emergencies on occasion, the ability to walk up and down several flights of stairs, walking and/or standing for several hours, using ladders to reach high walls or ceilings, talking, hearing, smelling, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. Periodically, the employee in this classification will be required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Normal color vision is required, as well as close vision, distance vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Painters must be able to identify and differentiate between subtle differences in color of paints.
  • The employee may be required to push, lift, and/or carry up to 75lbs.
  • The noise level in the work environment can be moderately loud in some areas of the portfolio.
  • Employee will be outside in all kinds of weather
  • Painters should be able to stay physically active for many hours, because they spend most of the day standing with their arms extended.
  • The employee will be required to climb on and use ladders.
Education/Work experience requirements
  • High School Graduate or GED Certification and proof thereof required.
  • Minimum 2 years of residentail or commercial painting experience required.
  • Proficiency to speak and write in English language is required.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License with no major or continuing driving offenses that demonstrate a lack of concern for safety in the last 5 years

NOTE: This position is considered a safety sensitive position for which impairment while working presents a substantial risk of death under the Washington State Law. Therefore, successful candidates will be required to pass a satisfactory background check and a drug screen (including cannabis).
