The Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood samples from patients and ensuring proper handling and labeling of specimens for accurate testing. This role includes preparing patients for procedures, managing sample documentation, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. An ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, comfortable with patient interaction, and committed to maintaining high standards of safety and hygiene.
Key Responsibilities:
Blood Collection:
- Draw blood from patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture methods, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Label and record samples accurately, ensuring they are prepared for transport to the lab or testing facilities.
- Follow standard procedures to handle biohazardous materials and dispose of needles and other supplies safely.
Patient Interaction:
- Explain procedures to patients, answer any questions, and ease patient concerns.
- Verify patient identification and ensure correct labeling of samples to maintain accuracy.
- Provide post-draw instructions, such as aftercare and safety, and manage any adverse reactions promptly.
Sample Handling and Documentation:
- Ensure all samples are correctly labeled, recorded, and processed according to laboratory protocols.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records of all collections and patient interactions, ensuring HIPAA compliance.
- Transport or arrange for the transport of samples to labs while maintaining the integrity of each sample.
Equipment and Supply Maintenance:
- Maintain and clean phlebotomy equipment, ensuring proper functioning and compliance with safety regulations.
- Stock and organize phlebotomy supplies, including needles, tubes, and bandages, to ensure efficient workflow.
- Follow safety and infection control protocols, using personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a phlebotomy training program is preferred.
- Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) by an accredited organization (e.g., NHA, ASCP) is strongly preferred.
- Prior experience as a phlebotomist in a healthcare setting is beneficial but not always required.
- Knowledge of proper blood collection procedures, sample handling, and HIPAA regulations.
