Job Description
The Opportunity
Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) is looking for a meticulous and detail-oriented Finance & Accounting Coordinator to manage ERA’s financial transactions and ensure accurate record-keeping. This role requires maintaining accurate financial records and bookkeeping journals, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the person in this role will participate in our annual audit process, and provide other support in maintaining and improving our financial/operations systems as appropriate.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manages ERA’s cost-center-based accounting operations per internal policies and procedures, and generally accepted accounting principles:
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Accruals, deferrals, non-cash expenses, capitalization, depreciation
- Reserves and net assets: restricted, unrestricted
- Allocations and shared expenses
- Monthly closes (i.e., monthly reconciliation of Bank, investment, revenue, and credit card expenses)
- General ledger
- Integrated payroll processing with federal and state tax deposits and filings
- Transaction monitoring, research, and archiving
- Scheduled reporting for reconciliation, aging, and cashflow.
- Provides support to the Director of Finance in the production of the annual budget and subsequent forecasts.
- Provides support to the Director of Finance for the annual audit review of financial statements and controls as well as annual 990 filings.
- Provides support to the Director of Finance in the production of financial statements for the bi-monthly Finance Committee and Board of Directors meetings.
- Supports business development and funder financial reporting needs.
- Generate finance reports from QuickBooks as needed by the management.
- Assists with light compliance and office tasks:
- Labor poster compliance
- Responsible for receipt and soft delivery of mail
- Assist with banking transactions for ERA, as and when assigned
- Some vendor communications to ensure smooth AP/AR might be required.
Candidate Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years /bookkeeping/accounting experience with a solid understanding of accounting principles. Strong preference for nonprofit expertise. Additional experience with 501c(4) accounting guidelines is desirable.
- Strong to Expert QuickBooks Online experience.
- Strong Paylocity (or equivalent Payroll platform) user.
- Strong BILL.com user (including Spend & Expense, aka Divvy).
- Must navigate a paperless office confidently and adeptly and comfortable with cloud-based workplaces.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and SharePoint.
- Good time management, prioritization, and multitasking abilities
- Strong customer service orientation with excellent interpersonal with colleagues at all levels.
- Ability to work at least 2 days per week in the ERA office. Candidate must be located in and around San Francisco and must be able to work in our San Francisco office at least 2 days per week.
- Must pass a criminal and financial background check.

- Candidate must have a valid authorization to work in the United States. ERA is unable to sponsor work visas. ERA will also not provide relocation assistance.
Compensation & Benefits
The Finance & Accounting Coordinator position will be hourly non-exempt with an hourly rate ranging $30 to $35. The pay rate will be determined based on experience and expertise. This is a part-time employment opportunity and is not eligible for health and other insurance benefits. Eligible for vacation and sick time accrual based on hours worked and based on full-time equivalency rate.
