About the Role

The Company is in search of an Executive Director for its Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC). The successful candidate will be responsible for leading large-scale astronomical data processing and management projects, ensuring their timely and within-budget delivery. This pivotal role involves overseeing a diverse team of approximately 150 scientific, technical, and administrative staff, and the Executive Director will be tasked with strategic planning, fostering scientific excellence, and promoting the optimal use of the center's resources within the broader astronomical community. The position also requires close collaboration with the scientific community, as well as with leadership at the company and other relevant institutions, in developing the case for IPAC's involvement in new missions and initiatives. Additionally, the Executive Director will represent the company in national and international forums related to astronomy and will be the primary liaison with funding agencies to support IPAC's goals. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years' experience in managing scientific research projects or facilities. The role demands a proven track record in fostering teamwork, excellent communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with external project offices and government funding agencies. The Executive Director must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder. This is a unique opportunity to lead a world-class scientific and data center with a rich history of enabling transformative research in astronomy and planetary science, and to play a key role in shaping its future as a hub for the next generation of space and ground-based observatories.
