The Lab Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operations and efficient functioning of the laboratory facilities within the Facilities Department. They are responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring safety compliance, understanding evolving lab needs, and managing the needs of laboratory personnel.
Responsibilities:
Coordinates and manages activities and programs within a laboratory facility; manages records for all activities and programs, as necessary; provides technical support for laboratory equipment, supplies, and data analysis tools.
Partners with all lab stakeholders (Lab Managers, EHS, Facilities Management, Program Manager, Occupancy Planning).
Lab Safety Standards - EHS:
Chemical Hygiene Standard
Management of Change Standard
Hazcom Standard
Lab Equipment Move/Adds/Change - Occupancy Planning/MAC.
General Lab Use Plan / Oversight - GPS/Occupancy Planning.
Field new lab requests and partners with Lab Manager to propose potential solutions.
Manage relationships with teams/lab managers and builds familiarity with activities that take place within them.
Lab Equipment Inventory Database - FM and Lab Owner.
Conduct PMs, Annual inspections, and inspections with MTV FD.
Lab Equipment Mechanical Standards - FM.
Manage As-builts.
Ensure PMs on lab equipment are completed.
Establish and identify budget needs for lab growth.
Lab Audits - EHS and FM.
Oversee new furniture/equipment purchases.
Conduct weekly walks with lab managers, facility manager(s), and EHS manager.
Lab Hygiene and Cleaning oversight and setting cadence with teams:
Enforce all safety regulations and protocols within the laboratory, and work with the SOPs that Waymo EHS has put in place.
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify and address potential hazards.
Train and educate laboratory personnel on safe handling of equipment and materials.
Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and environmental laws.
Provide guidance to laboratory technicians and assistants in line with EHS regulations.
Develop and implement training programs for laboratory personnel.
Monitor performance and provide feedback to improve laboratory efficiency.
Address any personnel issues and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Understand utilization of current lab square footage and equipment.
Project future lab needs based on current utilization and expected growth.
Partner with alternate GPS team members to meet scaling needs of the Lab footprint.
Develop and manage the laboratory budget, including forecasting and tracking expenses.
Assist in the formal department budgeting process by providing lab-based inputs.
Research and procure laboratory equipment and supplies, obtaining the best value for the budget.
Negotiate contracts with vendors for laboratory services and supplies.
Prepare clear and concise reports on laboratory activities and performance.
Effectively communicate with laboratory personnel, department heads, and other stakeholders.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all laboratory activities and procedures.
Lab Projects - Real Estate and Projects:
Provide line of sight to future needs.
Ability to aggregate lab requirements into digestible real estate needs.
Provide ROM pricing and investigation.
Understand lead time for lab-related builds.
Operational Management:
Optimize lab resources and utilization through close partnership with lab stakeholders and occupancy planning.
Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory activities.
Maintain accurate records of all laboratory activities, including equipment usage, inventory, and waste disposal.
Order and manage laboratory supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels.
Oversee calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment, adhering to manufacturer specifications.
Address escalations in partnership with lab managers, EHS, FM, OP, and Security.
Work with the Lab teams to complete shipments in and out of facilities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in science, laboratory technology, engineering, or a related field, required.
Ability to read as-built drawings and complete rough order of magnitude estimates.
Experience in facility management.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in a laboratory setting, required.
Proven experience in laboratory operations and management.
Strong understanding of laboratory safety regulations and compliance requirements.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
Proficiency in laboratory software and data management tools.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Detail-oriented and organized with a strong commitment to quality and accuracy.
Pay: $110,000 - $125,000/Year
The pay listed is the salary range for this position. Any specific offer will vary based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and alignment with market data.
