Position Overview:
The Teen Sports and Recreation Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a dynamic sports and recreation program specifically designed for teens at the Boys and Girls Club of San Leandro (BGCSL). This role involves creating an engaging curriculum, leading sport activities, and fostering a positive environment that encourages physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship among teen members. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills, possess a deep understanding of youth development principles, and have a passion for empowering teens through sports and recreation. They will also be proactive in building relationships with teens, staff, and community partners, ensuring that programs are inclusive, innovative, and aligned with the Club's mission. Additionally, the candidate will be skilled in program evaluation and adaptation, continuously improving offerings to meet the evolving needs and interests of teen members.
This role will also collaborate with middle school Program Managers to design and execute comprehensive sports and recreation activities, including basketball leagues and other athletic programs.
Requirements:Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
- Curriculum Development:
- Design and develop a comprehensive sports and recreation curriculum tailored to the interests and needs of teen members, ensuring alignment with BGCSL goals and standards.
- Adapt curriculum to accommodate various skill levels and interests, promoting inclusivity and active participation among teens.
- Program Implementation:
- Implement Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) programming and curriculum, tailoring it to the specific needs of the local teen community and Club members.
- Ensure all activities are conducted in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment, adhering to best practices and safety guidelines.
- Sport Activities Leadership:
- Organize, lead, and supervise a variety of sports activities, including basketball leagues, tournaments, and recreational games for teens.
- Develop and maintain schedules for regular sports practices, games, and special events.
- Recruit and manage volunteers and coaches to assist with teen sports programs, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Collaboration with Program Managers:
- Work closely with middle school Program Managers to create and implement sports and recreation activities that complement academic and enrichment programs for teens.
- Coordinate resources, facilities, and schedules to maximize teen participation and ensure program success.
- Member Engagement:
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages teen members to participate in sports and recreation activities.
- Build strong relationships with teens, acting as a mentor and role model, promoting healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
- Program Evaluation and Reporting:
- Monitor and assess the effectiveness of teen sports and recreation programs, gathering feedback from participants and staff.
- Prepare and submit regular reports on program outcomes, participation rates, and areas for improvement.
- Community and Family Engagement:
- Engage with families and the broader community to promote sports and recreation programs for teens, encouraging involvement and support.
- Represent BGCSL at community events, promoting the importance of physical activity and healthy living for teens.
- May be asked to participate in ad hoc projects as needed.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Sports Psychology or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in youth sports programming, coaching, or physical education, with a focus on teens, preferably within a non-profit or community-based organization.

- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Passion for working with teens and a commitment to fostering their growth and development.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).

- Specialized equipment: Sporting equipment relevant to activities, such as basketballs, cones, and other athletic materials. Occasionally Club vans operate for member transportation (if licensed).
