We are currently hiring an Engineering and Capital Manager to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario.
Compass Minerals' Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada's Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
How will you contribute to the team?
The Engineering and Capital Manager will oversee capital project engineering, support operations projects, technical support of maintenance and equipment reliability, and achievement of Operational Excellence goals at the Goderich Mine facility. The role will directly oversee the Goderich Mine engineering team and will serve as a member of the Goderich Mine site leadership team. The Engineering and Capital Manager will function with a high degree of autonomy and report directly to the Site VP Operations .

Leads the Engineering and Operations Support Team
- Know the status of all engineering project activities and keep others informed without performing all of the work personally. The ability to identify and anticipate problems, extract information, and manage multiple capital projects at once is important.
- Lead the engineering support of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
- Develop, manage and mentor Engineering and Operations Support Department staff.
- Work with engineers on multiple capital projects ensuring that scope, schedule, technical correctness and budge goals are met.
Project Engineering
- Manager multiple capital projects ensuring that critical path and budget goals are met
- Oversee the preparation of appropriate capital requests, including well developed and technically correct scope, engineering design, project costs, project schedule and operational and financial analysis.
- Develop and help to manage capital project engineering and construction contracts.
- Ensure that the projects are designed, specified, purchased and installed correctly and safely.
- Implement construction/installation strategies that coordinate with the mine production plan.
- Ensure that the finished capital project meets the requirements of all project stakeholders including all of the requirements of the production facility in which it is installed.
- Establish and/o work with the Management of Change (MOC) processes and effective commissioning processes.
Process Engineering and Productivity
- Identify the key production processes at the Goderich Mine which generate the highest levels of expense or impede the production process and devise appropriate process and production engineering solutions.
- Develop and maintain short term and long term site plans.
- Work with Operations to develop engineering solutions for production bottlenecks and problems.
- Provide engineering resources to support productivity measurements and methods to achieve productivity improvements and Operational Excellence Goals.
Maintenance and Reliability
- Respond to both Site Operations and Maintenance Manager requests to implement process and safety improvements.
- Work closely with Maintenance Department to support Reliable Asset Management (RAM) objective
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiencies/reliability in facility equipment.
- Lead Site Team to set standards for equipment purchases.
- Work closely with Production and Maintenance to set standards for equipment purchases.

what should you bring to the role?
- An accredited degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Mine Engineering is highly preferred
- Other engineering degrees may be considered in candidates with a strong background in mining or other heavy industrial environment or with significant technical process experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in chemical and/or mining environment leading mining engineering capital projects, process engineering, facility engineering, etc. preferred.
- Experience with lean manufacturing/six sigma a plus.
- Registered Professional Engineer Required .
- Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Project, Word, Excel etc.) is required.
- Experience with AutoCAD, MS Project, Computerized Maintenance Management System ( CMMS) systems is required.
- Other mining or heavy industrial related software experiences a plus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

- While performing the duties, the employee may frequently be exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The employee may occasionally be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment may typically be moderate to loud. When and where required, all work environment exposures are reduced to acceptable occupational levels through the distribution and usage of personnel protective equipment.

what is the work schedule
- This is a Monday-Friday position. Overtime as required.
- This position may be expected to work underground.
- If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate. A relocation package is available to those that qualify.
