We are currently hiring a Mine Staff Engineer to join the Engineering team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario.
Compass Minerals' Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada's Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
How will you contribute to the team?
This position functions within a team of other professionals, and reports directly to the Lead, Ground Control Engineering . This position will work closely with the Engineering, Production, and Maintenance Departments to support mine projects and improvement initiatives. This position will actively participate in the mine continuous improvement process .
Mining Engineering
• Work closely with Lead, Ground Control Engineering and Mine Technician to develop and update mine plans, both long-term and short-term.
• Work closely with Lead, Ground Control Engineering , Production Department, and Mine Engineering Technician to conduct mine surveys and ensure working points are kept up-to-date in development areas.
• Work closely with Lead, Ground Control Engineering and Mine Engineering Technician to conduct mine ventilation surveys and optimize the ventilation system.
• Work closely with the Lead, Ground Control Engineering and Geological Engineer to maintain and optimize ground control including a ssisting in the design and implementation of ground support systems; conducting regular inspections of ground conditions; analyzing geological data and geotechnical reports to assess rock mass characteristics, potential hazards and recommend mitigation strategies; and participating in risk assessments and incident investigations.
• Collaborate with mining operations and engineering teams to develop ground control plans and provide technical support.
• Stay current with industry best practices, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements related to mine engineering.
• Work with Production Department to develop budgetary models and maintain production cost forecasts.
• Assume a key role in mine risk management process and develop risk control mitigation plans and projects.
Mine Process Improvement
• Assume a key role in the mine Continuous Improvement Process.
• Conduct time studies, process audits, and benchmarking exercises to identify areas of opportunity.
• Work closely with Mine Production department to investigate opportunities to improve all aspects of the mining process and to reduce mining cost.
• Works closely with engineering, maintenance, and production departments to optimize the material handling process, from face to surface storage domes.
• Investigate and optimize drilling and blasting techniques to improve performance and reduce fines.
• Investigate new mining methods, mine plans, mine processes, and mining equipment that might improve mining efficiency and cost.
Project Management
• Prepares and submits capital appropriation requests, including return calculations.
• Implements projects and actively manages to ensure project schedule and budget commitments are met and project delivers agreed to benefits and objectives.
• Supports Engineering Manager in preparing annual capital budgets.
• Develops and manages engineering and construction contracts.
• Implements construction/installation strategies that coordinate with Mine production plan.
• Simultaneously manages multiple capital projects effectively
• Perform other related duties as required.
what should you bring to the role?
• An accredited degree in Mining Engineering is required.
• A degree in Geomechanics will be considered, depending on other qualifications.
• 5-10 years mining engineering or mine supervisory experience preferred, lesser experience considered depending on nature of experience and other qualifications.
• Ability to obtain Ontario Professional Engineer (P.Eng) required.
• Experience in Rock Mechanics & Ground Control Preferred.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office programs.
