bout the Facility - Houston VAMC
The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is a hospital affiliated with and operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. It is one of the department's largest hospitals, serving Harris County, Texas and 27 surrounding counties. It is named for Michael E. DeBakey, a renowned surgeon and president of Baylor College of Medicine.

The hospital in on a 118-acre campus on Old Spanish Trail and Almeda, just on the edge of the Texas Medical Center. It is accredited by JCAHO, and has 343 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 120-bed transitional care unit for long-term care.

RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
  • Primarily and professionally engaged in the design, optimization and technical evaluation of radiation treatment plans as well as ensuring precise and accurate radiation dose delivery. Medical Physicists are responsible for radiation protection of patients and staff. The responsibilities are defined as follows (including but not limited to):
    • vailability for consultation to provide advice or direction to technical staff when radiation treatments are being planned or when patients are being treated.
    • Specify and monitor methods to calculate MU's or treatment times.
    • Develop and maintain a method for the weekly and systematic review of the charts of all patients under radiation treatment.
    • Provide information on specification and selection in support of VA's acquisition of radiation producing machines, accessories, and computerized treatment planning systems.
    • Consultation as needed.
    • Quality management.
    • Teaching.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's Level or PhD
  • Must be Board Certified with at least two years of continuous working experience within the last three years.
  • Knowledge on the following procedures, equipment, and software:
    • Two years of experience - Documentation detailing experience in performing QA procedures.
    • One year of experience - Documentation detailing Therapeutic Medical Physics in a healthcare system that is ACR certified.
    • One year of experience - Varian Linear Accelerators: IX and Trilogy with Brain Lab Accessories following standards of TG-142.
    • One year of experience - Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) including Cone Beam CT
    • One year of experience - Eclipse and Pinnacle treatment planning system; and ARIA record and verify system, including the following treatment modalities: 2D/3D Conformal, SRS, SRT, SBRT, and IMRT/VMAT (following standards of TG-53).
    • One year of experience - IMRT QA: MapCheck I/II (or equivalent)
    • One year of experience - Philips and Siemens CT Simulator (or equivalent) and following standards of TG-66.
    • One year of experience - Using Cyberknife and Tomo/Radixact.
