What You Will Do
The Associate Laboratory Director for Chemical, Earth, and Life Sciences (ALDCELS) is seeking an outstanding, executive-level administrative partner to join the directorate's leadership team as the directorate's Staff Operations Manager (SOM). The Chemical, Earth, and Life Sciences Directorate is a capability-centered organization whose work spans the Laboratory's major scientific endeavors in the areas pertaining to nuclear deterrence, energy security, biosecurity, emerging threat preparedness, climate change, and pit production. Reporting to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD), the SOM serves as a key advisor and leader in executing effective business and operational functions by supporting strategic and tactical initiatives that enable the directorate's scientific missions.
As the SOM, you will conduct research and analysis on technical, operational, policy, and administrative issues and present recommendations to management; coordinate, oversee, and execute the ALD's response to action items and data calls; and provide guidance to managers and employees on operational and administrative issues where consistency across the ALD is necessary for effectiveness, efficiency, and regulatory or policy compliance. The SOM will be responsible for working closely with human resources professionals on performance, merit, and miscellaneous personnel issues; financial professionals on budget development; procurement and contract specialists for oversight and management.

Proven leadership skills and a record of accomplishment of successfully building collaborations and facilitating teamwork across organizational lines, including networking with key contacts outside of area of professional expertise.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred) from an accredited institution in business administration, business management, or a related field. Position requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Work Location: This position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Significant on-site work is expected. Remote workers will not be considered for this opportunity.

The Staff Operations Manager will:
- Work with all levels of our directorate management team on business and operational initiatives, providing input and leadership on key issues.
- Facilitate strategic and tactical communications within the directorate and broader laboratory.
- Lead and coordinate logistics for large reviews and assessments.
- Serve as the primary liaison to collaborate with deployed business and operational staff to facilitate planning and execution of a variety of domain specific activities.
- Facilitate the development and implementation of strategic and tactical plans related to staffing, succession planning, and funding requests.
- Lead the development and implementation of administrative procedures and processes.
- Manage professional and support staff, including providing leadership that improves the effectiveness of administrative support personnel across the directorate and provides for their professional development.
- Coordinate the planning, oversight, and implementation of business operations and institutional administrative requirements.
- Interface with all levels of Laboratory staff and management, Los Alamos Field Office, and assume specific delegated authority, as needed, to represent management as a liaison in responding to internal and external institutional requests.
