What You Will Do

The Information and Technology Division is seeking an experienced Staff Operations Manager (SOM) to oversee operational and administrative functions, ensuring consistency and compliance. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), the SOM will collaborate with various teams to drive operational excellence and support LANL's strategic initiatives. The role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, independence, and professionalism.

The SOM will interact with personnel at all management levels within LANL and senior executives, requiring flexibility, tact, and confidentiality. Expertise in business and operational excellence, and a commitment to continuous improvement, are essential.

The I&T Super Division, reporting to the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Business Management (ALDBUS), provides IT support across the Laboratory. It includes five areas: Cyber Security, Network Infrastructure Services, Application and Data Services, Innovative Customer Experiences, and Program Strategy and Execution, unified under a single I&T mindset to align with the Laboratory's mission.

Key Duties of the SOM include:
  • Partnering with fellow division SOM's to collaborate with all division management levels on business and operational initiatives, offering input and leadership on key issues.
  • Facilitating strategic and tactical communications within the division, directorate and the broader laboratory.
  • Leading and coordinating logistics for large reviews and assessments.
  • Serving as the primary liaison with deployed business and operational staff to plan and execute various domain specific activities.
  • Facilitating the development and implementation of strategic and tactical plans related to staffing, succession planning, and funding requests.
  • Developing and implementing administrative procedures and processes.
  • Managing professional and support staff, providing leadership to enhance administrative support personnel effectiveness and their professional development.
  • Coordinating the planning, oversight, and implementation of business operations and institutional administrative requirements.
  • Interfacing with all levels of Laboratory staff and management, Los Alamos Field Office, and representing management as a liaison for internal and external institutional requests.
  • Proactively responding to various administrative matters.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Extensive experience providing administrative support, with a focus on business management, strategic financial management, administrative system development, event coordination, and similar duties.
  • Proven record of building collaborations and facilitating teamwork across organizational lines, including networking with key contacts internally and externally.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a proven ability to independently establish priorities while working under pressure, with frequent interruptions.
  • Effective and creative problem-solving skills including researching and recommending alternative solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience with project coordination, including the development and support of process improvements to meet high-level complex operational and business needs.
  • Experience breaking down complex metrics, including KPIs and dashboards, and reporting key data to high-level stakeholders.
  • Advanced supervisory experience with an excellent record of team building, collaboration, and leadership.
  • Experience guiding, mentoring, and growing the professional development of personnel; and leading operational teams to success.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of management and personnel, including negotiating, influencing, resolving conflict, building consensus, giving oral presentations, and written communications.
  • Proven experience influencing cross-functional teams and stakeholders without direct authority, using persuasive communication, relationship building, and strategic thinking.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Laboratory's organizational structure, policies, procedures, requirements, and various business systems.
  • Expert-level knowledge and ability to execute duties in alignment with Laboratory business, operational, and programmatic missions, goals, commitments, and critical issues.
  • Experience with change management and organizational transformation in a complex IT environment.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework and is located in Santa Fe, NM. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
