Job Description:
The Resident Plumbing Engineer will oversee the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of plumbing systems in a large industrial project. This role involves collaboration with project teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure plumbing systems meet project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory codes.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in industrial plumbing systems, including process piping, water supply, drainage, and waste management systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Engineering Support:
Develop and review plumbing system designs, schematics, and layout plans based on project specifications.
Ensure all designs comply with local, state, and national plumbing codes and standards (e.g., IPC, UPC, ASME standards).
Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (HVAC, Electrical, Structural) to integrate plumbing systems effectively.
Project Planning & Coordination:
Collaborate with project management to create and maintain plumbing project schedules.
Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and components.
Review and approve plumbing materials and equipment submittals.
Construction Oversight:
Conduct daily site inspections to monitor the installation of plumbing systems, ensuring compliance with designs and specifications.
Identify and resolve any issues or discrepancies related to plumbing installations.
Ensure the safety and quality of plumbing installations by enforcing best practices and safety regulations.
Testing & Commissioning:
Develop testing protocols and perform inspections to ensure proper functionality of plumbing systems.
Lead the commissioning process for plumbing systems, including pressure testing, flow testing, and leak detection.
Prepare detailed reports on system performance and recommend corrective actions if needed.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of design changes, site inspections, and installation progress.
Prepare daily/weekly progress reports and present updates to the project management team.
Assist in preparing as-built drawings and project closeout documentation.
Compliance & Quality Assurance:
Ensure plumbing systems adhere to safety, quality, and regulatory compliance standards.
Implement quality control measures to verify that installations meet project requirements.
Liaise with local authorities for necessary inspections and approvals.
Team Collaboration & Support:
Provide technical guidance and support to construction teams and subcontractors.
Participate in project meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and solutions.
Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians as required.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
To measure the effectiveness of the Resident Plumbing Engineer, the following KPIs will be used:
Design Accuracy & Compliance:
KPI Target: 100% compliance with local, state, and national plumbing codes and standards.
Measurement: Number of design non-compliances identified during inspections or by regulatory authorities.
Project Schedule Adherence:
KPI Target: 95% adherence to project timelines for plumbing-related tasks.
Measurement: Number of plumbing tasks completed on time vs. delayed.
Installation Quality:
KPI Target: Fewer than 2 major installation defects per quarter.
Measurement: Number of defects identified during site inspections and testing phases.
Testing & Commissioning Success Rate:
KPI Target: 100% of plumbing systems pass initial testing and commissioning.
Measurement: Percentage of systems that pass without needing major rework.
Safety Compliance:
KPI Target: Zero safety incidents related to plumbing installations.
Measurement: Number of safety incidents or near-misses reported on-site.
Cost Management:
KPI Target: Stay within the allocated plumbing budget with less than 5% variance.
Measurement: Comparison of actual spending vs. budgeted costs for plumbing activities.
Stakeholder Satisfaction:
KPI Target: 90% satisfaction rate from project stakeholders regarding plumbing design and execution.
Measurement: Feedback from project stakeholders (contractors, clients, team members) in post-project evaluations.
Documentation & Reporting:
KPI Target: Timely submission of all required reports and documentation, with 95% on-time rate.
Measurement: Number of reports and documentation submitted on time vs. late.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing Engineering, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in industrial plumbing design, installation, and project management.
Licenses/Certifications: Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred; Plumbing Design (CPD) certification is a plus.
Skills:
Proficiency in plumbing design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks).
Strong understanding of plumbing codes (IPC, UPC).
Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Effective communication and project management skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work on construction sites, including climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and standing for extended periods.
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
