Apple
Optical Sensing HW – Sensing HW Engineer (Laser/LED Sensing)
Apple, Cupertino, CA
SummaryPosted: Weekly Hours: 40 Role Number:200580080Apple is where individual imaginations gather together, committing to the values that lead to great work. Every new product we build, service we create, or Apple Store experience we deliver is the result of us making each other’s ideas stronger. That happens because every one of us shares a belief that we can make something wonderful and share it with the world, changing lives for the better. It’s the diversity of our people and their thinking that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do. When we bring everybody in, we can do the best work of our lives. Here, you’ll do more than join something — you’ll add something.
Design, develop, and launch next-generation light-sensing technologies.
Bring devices to life and enable them to interact with users and the environment in ways never imagined before. The optical sensing team designs and integrates sensors across a variety of Apple products such as iPhone, Watch, iPad, MacBook and Vision. The team is looking for a driven engineer to develop creative ideas and grow them into rigorous solutions. Join us in crafting solutions the world doesn't know of yet.
Description-Design and execution of optical sensors, including building simulations / models; model verification; sensor prototyping including interface of optical sensors with mixed signal electronic circuits; test and metrology strategies for manufacturing optical sensors; and associated system integration.
-Hands-on design and bring-up of characterization setups. Establish design verification goals and instrumentation requirements, develop and execute detailed characterization plans, and prioritize activities and next steps. Support verification of production test via electrical / optical design reviews and lab correlation measurements.
-Simulation/analysis using a variety of software tools to support design verification and characterization (e.g. Python, Matlab, Zemax, LightTools, JMP, etc.). Develop detailed models to determine SNR link budgets, and electrical and optical system integration requirements.
-Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver state-of-the-art sensing solutions. Drive technical activities and discussions with external vendors.
-Lead hypothesis-driven failure analysis, root-cause diagnosis, and system-level problem solving to provide design feedback. Analyze data to draw conclusions and enhance product design/manufacturability.
-Travel to support design/production/supplier teams as necessary. Business travel to support product development (10%).Minimum QualificationsStrong background in optics, electrical engineering, optical sensor / system design, and optical test and metrology.Expertise in optical sensor development spanning concept design, hardware prototyping including interface of optical sensors with mixed signal electronic circuits, signal processing, design verification and problem solving in a rapid production environment. Experience in optical modeling (Zemax, LightTools, FDTD) a plus.Expertise in design and bring-up of opto-mechanical lab setups, sensor characterization, failure analysis and simulation correlation. Knowledge of electrical and optical test and metrology equipment, including profilers/cameras/detectors, power meters, spectrum analyzers, spectrometers, LED / laser drivers, and oscilloscopes.Expertise using Python, C/C++, C#, Matlab, or similar for modeling, lab equipment control, data acquisition, and data analysis.Excellent written and verbal communication skills; solid teamwork and leadership skills.BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant proven experience.Preferred QualificationsExperience supporting volume manufacturing of optical systems is a plus, specifically the verification of production test via lab measurements and leading failure analysis for first-of-a-kind technologies.Pay & BenefitsAt Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range.
