Position Purpose:

The Manager of Employee & Labor Relations position has system-wide responsibilities specifically for Mt Sinai Hospital in creating a positive workforce environment. This is an operations management position requiring a strategic thinker responsible for overseeing and implementing the Employee Relations strategies, programs and policies and is vital to ensure that Sinai Chicago is compliant with legal and employment matters. The manager must function with a high level of professionalism, integrity and sound judgment. The manager is responsible for the administration of employee policy, and other related employment issues. The individual in this role collaborates with caregivers, frontline leaders and HR professionals to ensure compliance with policies and employment laws and must have a deep understanding of and extensive experience with employment law including FMLA, ADA, FLSA, NLRA and state laws.

This position consults directly with leaders on complex employee related issues. This working manager consults with managers and employees on discipline, conflict resolution, change management and retention. The manager will review and conduct a risk assessment for employee discipline, terminations, layoffs and other significant adverse employment actions. This role will work with HR operations and other SINAI leadership to identify and implement various solutions including training, compensation, pay practice, improvement processes, and efficient and effective systems and policies.As part of the revenue cycle team, the Logistic Technician is responsible for gathering all demographic and insurance information at the time a patient presents for service. The Logistic Technician is responsible for verifying all information for accuracy, thus ensuring prompt billing of all insurance claims. The Logistics Technician is also responsible for counseling all customers on their financial responsibility to Holy Cross Hospital.

Key Job Activities:
  • Partners with other HR leaders and key stakeholders to operationalize over-arching employee and labor strategies, negotiation goals, and actions to address trending and immediate employee and labor issues.
  • Partners with leaders to gauge, engage, give voice and assess caregiver needs and concerns through rounding, committees and teams.
  • Work with HR professionals and managers to understand and anticipate employee-related issues and develop approaches and potential outcomes to mitigate risk.
  • Manages employee and labor-related programs and areas including: policy revision proposals, internal HR procedures and identification of internal and external best practices and protocols.
  • Works with Human Resource, Training and Development and operational leaders to develop and conduct continual education around employee management, positive workforce culture and industry best practices.
  • Independently interpret and provide advice on Sinai policies and procedures, applicable labor/employment laws, and legal decisions (in consultation with Legal Counsel) and apply them to situations, helping to ensure consistency.
  • Provide counsel to employees regarding employment matters, collective bargaining agreements and work-related concerns.
  • Conducts management investigations of employee complaints; may also serve as lead investigator of employee complaints; partner with Office for Compliance to conduct investigations of complaints by or against patients and vendor relations.
  • Serves as lead and or co-negotiator on collective bargaining teams.
  • Represents organization in grievances, arbitrations, and administrative proceedings.
  • Manages, tracks, monitors and reports on claims, legal expenses and other cases requiring legal payouts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Work Experience:
  • Master's degree in business, Human Resources or Labor Relations/Industrial Relations or related areas.
  • Seven or more years of experience representing management employing at least 1200 employees in all aspects of employee relations.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proven expertise in culture development, engagement strategies and positive workforce outcomes.
  • Experience representing employers in mediation, before EEOC and/or state EEO agencies required.
  • Knowledge of external administrative agencies, their functions and jurisdiction.
  • Must be seen as a creditable messenger and able to present to all levels of organization.
  • Excellent facilitation, written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate through presentation, coaching and training.
  • Ability to operate in and manage ambiguity, risk, and changing direction of projects and strategies.

Registry (per diem) Caregivers are caregivers who work less than 1,000 hours in a calendar year. Registry caregivers are employees of Sinai Health System but are typically on an as needed basis. These caregivers may be called upon to cover full-time or part-time caregivers during PTO events or sick leave as well as to provide supplemental coverage. Registry Caregivers are not eligible for Sinai's benefit programs with the exception for Sick-C, PPO Medical Plan, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and non-match eligible contribution to the Sinai Health System Consolidated 403(b) retirement savings plan.
