Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the direction and leadership of the Head Nurse, the staff nurse will provide professional nursing care to patient/clients within an assigned unit. Diagnoses and treat responses to actual or potential health problem by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, and teaching, health counseling and the provision of care supportive to a restorative of life and wellbeing. Maintains safe levels of care while adhering to a medical regimen and collaboration with the physicians and other health team members.
Staff Nurse Responsibilities
❖ Initiates and completes the patient admission history, assesses the patient according to established guideline and formulate a nursing diagnosis.
❖ Formulates and implements an individualized nursing care plan based on identified problem/needs. Sets priority with the patient. Delivers and or directs care to meet patient needs.
❖ Observes symptoms or changes in patient's care status and responds appropriately.
❖ Collaborate with other health care professionals in the care of assigned patients and includes the significant other in teaching and discharge planning.
❖ In accordance to hospital policy assists with diagnostic testing procedures. Administers medications and treatments as ordered.
❖ On an ongoing basis evaluates patient's response and patient status and makes appropriate modification on the nursing care plan.
❖ In the absence of a Head Nurse the RN will take charge of the unit.
❖ Adheres to established policies related to patient abuse, patient's rights cultural spiritual beliefs and confidentiality.
❖ In the absence of a Head Nurse patient care assignments based on patient acuity of illness and the skill level required to meet patient's needs. Provides guidance supervision to the staff.
❖ Recognizes emergency situations and functions effectively according to emergency protocols.
❖ Recognizes Code Pink processes and Infant protection system alarm management
❖ Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events.
❖ Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately addressed.
❖ Explains, involves and instructs patient/families concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.
❖ Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record.
❖ Identifies personal learning needs and seeks opportunities for self-development.
❖ Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences.
❖ Interprets the philosophy vision and mission of the hospital as well as the department to the patient and significant others and the community.
❖ Adheres to policies governing uniform codes, attendance and punctuality.
❖ Adheres to the Guiding Principles: Safety, Excellence, Patient Centered Approach, Cost Saving, keeping patient first, Managing the unit resources
❖ Educates/instructs mothers on breastfeeding and use of breastfeeding-related equipment.
❖ Educates mothers on breast milk storage and transportation of expressed milk.
❖ Performs other professional nursing activities as delegated by Nursing Service Administrator.
❖ Participates in the unit Performance Improvement program and monitors, audits, evaluates the trends pertinent to health care.
❖ Provides patient teaching that is diagnoses related and age specific and document accordingly.
❖ Maintains a level of cultural competence.
❖ Knowledge of interpersonal/team building methods.
❖ To be aware of the population specific patient management for the area which they work.
❖ Understands policy and procedure related to Limited English Proficiency LEP)
❖ Knowledge of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) patient safety.
❖ Encourages participation of the parent/s/o in the care of the hospitalized patient and document.
❖ Care for intravenous and perform catheter care as per policy.
❖ Completes pre-op checklist for patients going to the operating Room.
❖ Assesses patient post operatively upon return from the recovery upon arrival to the unit
❖ Discharges patient with instructions on medication, to administer wound care, dressing changes, school letter (if needed) appointment and other follow up referrals.
❖ Performs IV Cannulation to pediatric patient when certified by Metropolitan Hospital
❖ Maintain active BLS status.

Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
