GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Principal is the professional leader of the school. Either directly or through the proper delegation of authority, he/she is the supervisor of the instructional program, the organizer of the schedule, the advisor of the students, the school disciplinarian, the coordinator of the student and parent relations, the administrator of the extracurricular program, the liaison between teachers and the Central Office, the director and evaluator of teaching efforts, the public relations representative for the school, the manager of the school facilities, and the supervisor of clerical, custodial and food service employees within the building.
DUTIES:
The Principal shall be responsible for the following duties which he/she performs directly or through the proper delegation of authority. These duties shall be carried out within the framework of the Connecticut General Statutes, the CT State Department of Education regulations, the policies and regulations of the Berlin Board of Education, and the collective bargaining agreements of all certified and non-certified staff member associations.

Position to begin July 2024; annual salary in accordance with negotiated agreement between the Berlin Board of Education and the Association of Berlin Administrators; $151,703 - 166,870. The closing date for this posting is June 13, 2024.

I. ADMINISTRATION
- Prepares the annual budget of the elementary school, arranges for disbursements within budget allowances, and reviews and authorizes all budget requests for the school.
- Manages the financial affairs of the school and ensures that appropriate records are maintained.
- Participates in the recruitment of faculty.
- Constructs the master list of classes, assigns classes and assigns students and teachers to classes.
- Assigns substitute duties.
- Monitors the procurement of textbooks, supplies and equipment.
- Exercises oversight of the physical plant, furniture, equipment and grounds.
- Prepares annual and intermittent reports.
- Assigns specific duties to aides and volunteers.
- Monitors the athletic and extracurricular activity programs.
- Ensures appropriate planning and supervision of field trips and other school-sponsored trips.
- Makes arrangements for promotion, open house, and other public events.
- Arranges for student assemblies.
- Maintains a program of evaluation of the total work of the school, monitors the components thereof, and takes steps for improvement where necessary and appropriate.
- Ensures the confidentiality of student and faculty records in compliance with all state and federal regulations.
- Conducts new faculty orientation programs.
- Maintains a proper environment for the health, safety and security of students and staff.
- Handles grievances of staff members.
II. INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISION
- Serves as the instructional leader of the school.
- Arranges for the formulation and periodic review of the school's philosophy of education in consonance with school system and community expectations.
- Conducts observations of teachers and evaluates their performance and, where necessary, arranges a cooperative program of improvement in concert with the Berlin Public Schools Professional Growth and Evaluation Plan.
- Confers with teachers on all instructional matters.
- Procures textbooks, supplementary materials, multimedia materials, supplies and equipment.
- Schedules regular team, department and faculty meetings.
- Promotes in-service training of the professional staff.
- Maintains a program of evaluation of student achievement.
- Supports the district plan and puts in place protocols for the use of data and software to improve instruction, communication and student performance. Promotes staff morale and encourages a productive team spirit.
- Facilitates the development of instructional plans which support best practices.
- Promotes and facilitates relevant and timely professional development which is aligned with best practices and current research and supports district and school improvement plans.
III. OTHER SUPERVISION
- Supervises the work of all non-certified staff members.
- Supports the professional development of all certified and non-certified staff members.
IV. SUPPORT SERVICES
- Facilitates the identification of any student at risk, either academically, behaviorally, socially or emotionally.
- Supervises and promotes the district and school SRBI plan.
- Initiates effective interventions that would lead to positive growth.
- Collaborates with the Director of Pupil Personnel and other special education personnel.
- Serves as the primary evaluator of special education personnel.
- Participates in Planning and Placement Team meetings and supports integration of special education students in the elementary school program.
V. CURRICULUM
- Monitors the evaluation of the school's educational program and participates in the revision of the program.
- Encourages the development of curriculum projects and selection of appropriate instructional materials.
VI. COMMUNICATION
- Promotes effective communication within the school and the community.
- Serves as liaison with parents through any formalized parent association group, other groups of parents, or with individual parents.
- Keeps the staff informed of school system developments and transmits information from the Central Office.
- Keeps the Central Office informed of school matters, with special attention to situations or conditions which may have public impact.
VII. STUDENT RELATIONS AND DISCIPLINE
- Maintains proper standards of student conduct, within the school and at outside of school functions.
- Follows district policies and regulations in disciplining students.
- Consults with teachers and support staff in the resolution of student behavior problems.
- Serves as the school's liaison with legal and social agencies.
- Conducts new student orientation programs.
VIII. EVALUATION
- The Principal reports to and is evaluated by the Superintendent of Schools.
