Primary Purpose:
To provide leadership in the district's Special Education program and to develop, implement, and administer the program to meet the needs of all eligible Special Education students.
Qualifications:
The primary purpose of this position is to oversee and support the overall operation of the Special Education Department.
Education/Certification:
Special Knowledge/Skills: Three years previous administrator experience
Ability to deal with all aspects of special education programs

Education/Certification:
- Professional Educators License with the Director of Special Education Administrative Endorsement
- Master's Degree
- Successful passage of Teacher and Principal Evaluator modules
Special Knowledge/Skills: Three years previous administrator experience
Ability to deal with all aspects of special education programs
Experience:
- Completion of an approved program for directors of special education that includes a minimum of one course in each of the following: special education law, special education finance, supervision of programs for children with disabilities, and cross-categorical special education methods.
- Hold a professional educator license endorsed in an administrative field and complete 30 semester hours of coursework in special education with at least one course in special education law, special education finance, supervision of programs for children with disabilities, and cross-categorical special education methods. The remainder if the 30 semester hours of coursework may be in any of the following areas: curricular adaptation and modifications and assistive technology, facilitation of least restrictive environment for all students, characteristics of students with disabilities, collaboration with parents and school personnel, transition services for students with disabilities, and educational and psychological diagnosis and remedial techniques.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Encourages and supports the development and implementation of effective instructional programs to achieve identified needs.
- Evaluates and recommends improvement in the purposes, design, materials, and implementation of the instructional program, as well as other support programs.
- Supports the district-wide goals and objectives for school and organizational climate.
- Relates to staff, students, and parents in ways that convey equality and mutual respect.
- Maintains accurate district and campus accounts following local, state and federal guidelines for Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA).
- Ensures that the staff implements school improvement efforts that are consistent with federal and state law.
- Effectively uses the district's appraisal system with other staff members supervised.
- Is effective in "coaching" staff, providing technical assistance to principals, teachers and encourages improved overall performance.
- Ensures that federal and state laws and regulations concerning the education of students with disabilities are observed.
- Offers suggestions to ensure that policies, state and federal regulations support the teaching/learning process for handicapped students
- Defines the program and fiscal needs in the budget development process, ensuring that fiscal resources address the needs of special education programs and services.
- Standard and special reports indicate responsible fiscal control over program budgets.
- Ensures that support services for students with disabilities are effective in achieving their objectives.
- Ensures that rules and procedures for the discipline of special education students are effective and conform to federal and state laws. Provides support to campuses to ensure compliance of federal and state laws.
- Participates in professional development and training programs.
- Participates in professional organizations and disseminates ideas and information to other professionals.
- Communicates effectively with campus staff, parents and community members.
- Initiates and maintains effective liaison with other school districts and community resources to keep abreast of educational developments and ideas.
- Coordinates the Dyslexia programs to encourage student success.
- Assist with textbook selection process.
- Revises and updates district policy for instructional services.
- Assists in the coordination of district - wide assessments and planning initiative.
- Assists in overseeing and coordinating the development of campus plans.
- Performs duties in a professional, ethical and responsible manner.
- Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the BSD88 safety program.
- Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
- Support the district's social media efforts that highlight the hard work of our students and staff as well as increase communication with all stakeholders.
- Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption of district operations.
- Demonstrates a high level of independent, ethical, and professional conduct.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor.
