Site Safety & Health Officer

Stryker DES is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Site Safety & Health Officer on project sites in Connecticut and New York who have at least at least 5 years of safety experience in the decommissioning, demolition, construction, and environmental remediation industries.

Candidates will report Stryker DES's Corporate EHS Director and will help deliver Stryker DES's core values: excellence in service, commitment to health, safety and attention to regulatory compliance. The working environment will start at the site in Wallingford Connecticut and will vary for future potential travel with each job as qualified candidates(s) would be moving from site to site depending on our client's needs, workload and project scope. Responsibilities

  • Execute and Enhance Safety Strategy: Actively participate in and contribute to the development and execution of our safety strategy and culture on projects.
  • Monitor Construction Activities: Ensure daily compliance with federal, state, local, and company safety regulations and policies, with a focus on demolition and hazardous material safety.
  • Implement Safety Programs: Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of the project's safety program, adapting it to the specific challenges of demolition and environmental remediation.
  • Conduct Orientations and Inspections: Perform new hire safety orientations and conduct daily safety and health inspections, maintaining detailed logs.
  • Incident Investigations: Respond to, investigate, and report incidents, maintaining compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements.
  • Record Keeping: Prepare, maintain, and retrieve safety-related records, reports, or documents as required.
  • Safety Meetings and Training: Coordinate and conduct regular safety meetings and facilitate comprehensive safety training sessions.
  • Reference Material Maintenance: Keep the job site equipped with applicable safety reference materials, ensuring they are current and relevant to our specific operations.


Qualifications

  • Industry Experience: Minimum of 5 years in construction industry safety, with a preference for experience in demolition and environmental remediation.
  • OSHA Training: Must have completed 30-hour OSHA construction industry training. Additional training in demolition-specific safety protocols is a plus.
  • Advanced Safety Certifications: GSP, CSP, CHST, or equivalent certifications
  • Competent Person Training: As needed, based on project requirements.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of OSHA Construction standards, with an emphasis on demolition and environmental regulations.
  • Communication Skills: Proficient in providing clear and professional safety messages verbally and in writing.
  • Technical Proficiency: Intermediate skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Familiarity with industry-specific safety software is a plus.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and project managers.
  • Background and Health Checks: Must pass a criminal background check, drug and alcohol screen, and obtain medical clearance to wear a respirator.
  • Physical Requirements: Capable of lifting/pushing/pulling 50 lbs, climbing, kneeling, stooping, bending, and working in all weather conditions. Must be able to work with hazardous materials and in confined spaces.
  • Valid Drivers License

Preferred Experience

  • Demolition Project Experience: 3-5 years of safety experience in large industrial demolition projects.
  • HAZWOPER Training: Current 40-hour HAZWOPER training is preferred.
  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Safety Management or a related field.
  • Advanced Safety Certifications: CSP, CHST, or equivalent certifications are advantageous.
  • Crisis Management: Experience in emergency response and crisis management in high-risk environments.
  • Continued Education: Commitment to ongoing learning and staying informed on the latest safety practices and regulations in demolition and environmental remediation.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

Mobility and Project Assignment: The Site Safety & Health Officer will be assigned to new project locations across the United States upon the completion of their current projects. This role requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to new environments and challenges, as project assignments can vary in location and scope. Candidates should be prepared for and comfortable with frequent travel and potential relocations to meet the evolving needs of our clients and projects.

Travel: This is a field-based position with up to 100% travel.
