One of Vaco's PE-backed commercial construction clients is looking to onboard a Controller as part of an effort to “upgrade” the position as they continue to scale the organization.
This will be a high visibility/impact role with the ability to have an impact on the team, accounting processes and procedures. Prior commercial construction experience including WIP reporting is required as they will be balancing out hundreds of jobs ranging in size from $7-10K to upwards of $7M in value/revenue.

Day-to-Day
- Ensure accurate tracking of job costs, including labor, materials, subcontractor costs, and overhead, to monitor project profitability.
- Review and analyze job cost reports and work closely with project managers to ensure that cost projections are accurate and within budget.
- Manage billing, progress payments, and job closeout procedures to ensure proper revenue recognition.
- Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Analyze financial performance and prepare reports for senior management, highlighting key metrics, trends, and issues related to commercial construction projects.
- Manage the preparation and consolidation of financial data for budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting purposes.
- Prepare and manage cash flow projections and forecasts to ensure sufficient working capital for ongoing projects.
- Collaborate with project managers and senior leadership to track budget adherence and identify areas for cost reduction and efficiency improvements.
- Establish and enforce accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and construction industry standards.
- Work with external auditors to support annual audit and tax preparation processes.
- Oversee the reconciliation of general ledger accounts, including job costing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA certification preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a commercial construction environment.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting practices, including job costing, project billing, and revenue recognition.
- Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Procore, Viewpoint, Sage 300, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, and financial reporting requirements for the construction industry.
