Mechanical Design Engineer

Hire Velocity, Saint Gabriel, LA

Overview

Basic Function:

The Mechanical Design Engineer performs engineering calculations, which serve as the basis for the design, fabrication and repair of custom-designed shell & tube heat exchangers for the petrochemical, oil & gas industries. Actively engages in the exchanger design process from conceptual design to fabrication to ensure the client's needs are met or exceeded. Innovate creative solutions for customers to solve problems with existing or entirely new designs. Collaborate with fabrication shop personnel to design or modify tooling fixtures and make improvements to manufacturing processes and flow.

Major Duties:

  1. Review customer's material, design, inspection, and welding specifications to gain a comprehensive understanding of the customers' design, schedule and budget requirements. Interpret and apply ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code and applicable industry standards from TEMA, API and NBIC to ensure design products conform to approved design criteria.
  2. Perform pressure vessel calculations using Code calculation software programs, including RCS, PV Elite, Code Calc, and/or Compress.
  3. Perform finite element analysis of components using Nozzle-Pro or SolidWorks COSMOS.
  4. Develop technical specifications, design calculations and analytical solutions for pressure vessel and non-pressure vessel equipment. Certify engineering packages for fabrication.
  5. Evaluate design robustness and design for manufacturability by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials. Provide for safe design of equipment to limit company liability.
  6. Generate engineering drawings using SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD LT in compliance with applicable codes, accepted industry practices, and Ohmstede standards.
  7. Provide direction and guidance to drafter(s) for generation of engineering packages.
  8. Develop/refine manufacturing processes by designing new or modifying existing equipment or fixtures for fabricating, building, assembling, installing, lifting, and/or shipping components.
  9. Assure system and product quality by designing testing methods, testing finished product and system capabilities, and confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
  10. Select appropriate weld procedures to be used in fabrication of heat exchanger components. When required, work with welding engineer in development of new weld procedures.
  11. Interface with internal and external customers to provide engineering assistance when requested. Attend pre-fabrication meetings with customers. Provide job release information to shop.
  12. Prepare bills of material for long lead items at beginning of job and balance of material after drawings are finalized.
  13. Create and execute work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements of internal & external customers.
  14. Demonstrate flexibility in responding to unexpected demands due to changes in project scope or deadlines. Use organizational skills and prioritize tasks to handle deadline pressures without creating workflow problems for others.
  15. Manage personnel and tool resources to complete assignments on schedule. Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends. Update engineering schedule.
