Employment Status: Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Schedule: Monday & Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Sunday 7:30 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m.

Some Saturdays according to parish events schedule (varies)

Reports to: Business Manager & Campus Maintenance Specialist

Summary

This employee performs a variety of general custodial & maintenance duties for all parish facilities in a professional manner that assures safety, efficiency and procedures followed. The Custodian fulfills the mission by maintaining a neat, clean, safe, and organized environment. The Custodian assists the staff by ensuring that organization is well maintained for its purpose. The Custodian has decision making responsibilities within essential job functions, in keeping with organizational policies.

Essential Job Functions

Clean and remove trash from all areas of the Church, including the Sanctuary, Family Room, Adoration Chapel, Sacristy, etc.;

re-organize the pews and missalettes after each Mass, Funeral, Wedding, etc.; restock supplies in the restrooms. Clean all areas of the Parish Hall (Madonna Room) after events are held. This includes sweeping mopping, removing trash and restock restrooms. Prepare the room for the next event or reset to standard set-up; this includes moving tables, chairs and meeting equipment, storing tables and chairs as needed.

  • Assure all buildings are secured before leaving at conclusion of shift.
  • Keep parish grounds in good order and assures grounds are clean and safe.
  • Work schedule includes Sundays, some Saturdays, holiday or evening hours depending on event schedule. Other days may occasionally be required as well as seasonal (Christmas, Easter, etc.), and changes in environment or decorations for the Church and other facilities.
  • Accepts requests from various department personnel (parish priests, staff, parishioners or guests) for any services needed.
  • Informs management of any low or depleted supplies needing to be re-ordered.
  • Others duties as may be assigned.
Other Job Functions
  • Collaborates with others to enhance the work environment
  • Conducts emergency clean ups and repairs as needed
  • Conducts periodic maintenance activities and minor repairs

Professional
  • Possess any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the function of the job. A high school degree or equivalent required.
  • Possess both written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Adhere to all Policies on Ethics and Integrity in Ministry of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
Mental/Physical Demands
  • Required to lift or carry furniture, equipment, and supplies
  • Required to maintain composure and avoid inappropriate displays of anger
  • Required to perform strenuous walking, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing, climbing, twisting, grasping, and reaching overhead
  • Required to hear, see, and speak on a daily basis
  • Required to work with chemicals, exposure to dust, and slippery and uneven walking surfaces
  • Required to work in various climate conditions

Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent, preferred
  2. Experience with past custodial work or building maintenance preferred but not required

Other

Position is part-time with hours dependent on the number of liturgies or other

events scheduled on a particular weekend. Regular hours are Friday and

Monday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Sunday hours are: 7:30 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m.; Saturday hours vary and are as needed depending on the number of liturgies or other events scheduled. Approximately 25 hours per week total.
