Job Description

Job Title: Custodian Status: Part time

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt Salary Grade: 20

Department/Location: Immaculate Conception Catholic School / Yuma, AZ

Primary Function: Under the direction of the Pastor, School Principal or other assigned manager is responsible for performing janitorial services and light maintenance in a parish, school, or other facility. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, "...Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received." (Eph. 4:1)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the Church's spiritual and pastoral mission.
  • Shall abide by Catholic principles in the employee's professional and private life and shall govern his/her professional and private life in strict accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate complete adherence to Catholic moral strictures.
  • Develop a cleaning schedule to assure the Church or school is clean and maintained in an orderly fashion.
  • Perform general custodial duties to include cleaning and light maintenance of the parish or school facilities.
  • Assist grounds person on an "as needed" basis.
  • Perform scheduled monthly, semi-annual, or annual janitorial duties, i.e., floor waxing, painting, window washing, carpet cleaning, etc. as directed and in accordance with the parish maintenance schedule.
  • Provide set-up and cleaning of facilities for all activities as directed.
  • Maintain a supply of cleaning supplies and equipment; properly account for materials and equipment.
  • Maintain security of buildings, equipment, and tools
  • Comply with safety regulations as required; maintain a safe working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity; normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal maintenance environment.

Required Activities: Walking: sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; handling; hearing; carrying; and climbing ladders.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Diocese and Catholic Church; must be in full communion with the Catholic Church
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written; excellent human relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parishioners, and the public
  • Must be a self-starter; well organized; perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment; punctuality is a must; ability to travel locally as required; weekend and overtime work may be required.
  • Ability to work independently to complete task as needed.
  • Working familiarity with computer technology
  • Ability to successfully pass a background, criminal history, and credit history check.
  • Possess a valid Arizona driver's license.
  • Be able to read directions and label safety warnings. Must be safety conscious.
  • Knowledge, skills and experience in handling janitorial equipment and maintenance tools
  • Professional bearing; clean and neat personal appearance
Education and Experience:
  • High school graduate or equivalent education
  • 1 years' experience in a commercial or private maintenance, janitorial or similar position
Other/Preferred Skills
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
