Job Description
The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. You will be integral to our team, ensuring the accurate collection and processing of specimens.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
- Update patient information and collect specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
- Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels are 100% correct against the script.
- Package specimens for transport and store them according to the required temperature.
- Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow specific procedures for transport.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0-2 years of experience.
