Job Description
The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, explaining the venipuncture process to patients clearly and courteously, and demonstrating techniques using straight or butterfly needles.
Responsibilities- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
- Update patient information as needed.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all physician orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimens.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Phlebotomy skills, including blood draws and specimen collection.
- Customer service skills.
- Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed.
- 6 months to 2 years of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Experience with data entry.
- Ability to use centrifuges and other laboratory equipment.
This position is 100% onsite at Miami Sylvester Cancer Center. The role offers an opportunity to go permanent.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $18.50/hr.
