- Develops and modifies optical prescription for riflescopes, red dot sights, binoculars, monoculars, spotting scopes, laser rangefinders, as well as integration with new and existing technologies.
- Conducts proof-of-concept generation for innovative solutions to complex problems in optical design, opto-mechanical assembly, alignment, and testing of optical components and manufacturing systems.
- Establishes and supports efficient processes for optical lens manufacturing.
- Develops and implements optical test stations and manufacturing processes.
- Identifies equipment for optical alignment and measurement. Works with equipment vendors to provide demonstrations and presentations to engineering.
- Sets up and performs optical tests from base parameters using laboratory test equipment.
- Troubleshoots non-conformances in optical components and products. Provides the appropriate disposition and work with vendors to resolve issues.
- Evaluates and recommends improvements to optical designs for sourced components and products.
- Ensures that optical systems are in conformance with Leupold & Stevens published standards.
- Sets up and conducts tests of complete systems or subsystems under operational conditions to evaluate system performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development and standardization. Analyzes indicated and calculated test results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives.
- Assesses and approves the manufacturability of systems through sensitivity/tolerance analysis and other applicable means.
- Creates and maintains optical system layout drawings and associated documentation.
- Writes, modifies, and reviews assembly/alignment instructions, test procedures, and optical test records, and technical reports.
- Presents design reviews and technical knowledge to engineering disciplines.
- Reviews project specifications to ascertain objectives, nature of technical problems, and possible solutions, such as part design/redesign, selections/substitution of materials, parts or subassemblies.
- May be asked to support project management where skills of scheduling, budgeting, planning, and coordination are required.
- Provides internal consulting and development expertise to other Company areas.
- Develops and maintains strategic relationships with vendors and technology leaders to support the advancement of the Company's goals and product development.
- Stays informed concerning new optical/optomechanical technology and equipment and investigates their potential applications. Recommends incorporation of new technology for Company applications where feasible and practical.
- Maintains a safe work area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Requires a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in physics, laser, or optical engineering and a minimum of 5 years' experience as applied to the design of moderately complex optical and optomechanical systems, and manufacturing techniques and implementation.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Preferred experience includes demonstrated excellence in scientific, engineering, and manufacturing methodologies.
- Experience with spherical and aspheric lens production desired.
- Experience with developing, specifying, and testing specialized lens coatings desired.
- Zemax experience or equivalent optical design software experience desired. Zemax software must be used for company projects in order to effectively communicate ideas and designs to others within the company.
- Technical ability to design and evaluate optical systems using engineering tools and techniques.
- Ability to write reports and effectively present information and respond to questions from managers as well as technical and non-technical professionals.
- Ability to effectively use and apply Company approved software and office equipment to process and accomplish job-related tasks.
- Capability to work in a fast-paced cross-functional environment meeting demanding timelines.
- Knowledge of hunting and shooting sports preferred but not required.
