Rate of Pay: Line Worker $32.34 - $45.51, Apprentice Line Worker $21.25 - $29.83

This is an "at will" apprentice training position or a Line Work position within the Electrical department responsible for assisting in rebuilding, installing, repairing of electrical and fiber optic lines in the Marietta Power service area. This position allows for candidates to be hired at either Apprentice Line Worker or Line Worker based on qualifications. The employee is required to complete the job requirements and training for each step level within the apprentice line worker program. The employee performs more responsible line work as he/she advances to each level within the apprentice program. This position works under close supervision of an assigned Foreperson or experienced line worker as assigned.
  • Assists line workers in pulling or installing overhead and underground primary and secondary wires; digging ditches or holes; installing switches or capacitor banks; and installing, wiring and switching on underground switching cubicles and transformers.
  • Provides ground support in the installation of overhead and underground primary and secondary lines, residential and commercial services and meters. More advanced apprentice levels aid in transferring live electrical primaries from one pole to another hanging and wiring transformers while working on aerial bucket and/or climb poles pole up to 100 ft. if unable to reach with bucket trucks as assigned.
  • Provides ground support Assists in installing transformers, reclosers, capacitors, and other related parts on power poles. More advanced assignments involve single-phase transformers and building three phase transformer banks.
  • Will operate as assigned according to skill level: tractors, backhoes, rock cutters, boom and bucket trucks, and digs holes with line truck.
  • Assists in replacing and installs power poles and anchors and related parts damaged by weather or accidents.
  • Assists with installation and wiring of underground transformers, switching cubicles, and termination cabinets.
  • Repairs and installs overhead and underground street lighting.
  • Assists in monitoring the work of the ground support employees while work is in progress as assigned.
  • Assists in locating and repairing underground primary and secondary lines. Splices underground primary andsecondary power lines.
  • Cleans and inspects power line repair equipment, including rubber safety equipment and service truck bucket and boom equipment.
  • Cleans and inspects line repair and safety equipment including rubber gloves and aerial (bucket) and boom truck equipment.
  • Completes job order forms, warehouse materials list, fuel logs, personal timecard and other related forms as needed.
  • Serves on call, one week at a time on a rotating basis. Maintains availability for "on call" and overtime work. Must be able to respond to outages in a timely manner.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Must weigh no more than 280 lbs. due to the weight limitations and safety requirements of the equipment.
  • Must have completed a formal apprentice line worker program with a minimum of four years verifiable experience and successfully complete all sections of the comprehensive line worker test within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Must meet all job qualification standards required by APPA, OSHA, NESC, and Marietta Power.
  • Must have a valid Georgia Class A commercial driver's license, and a satisfactory seven-year driving history, to include no DUI's in the last 5 years.
  • Must have a working knowledge of overhead line work, including transformers (three-phase and single-phase), reclosers, capacitor banks, and sectionlizers.
  • Must have a working knowledge of underground line work, including termination of primary cables, three-phase and single-phase transformers, switching cubicles, fault locating, and repairing (includes switch-out, isolates, and grounding).
  • Knowledge and skill using all tools, materials, and equipment used in electrical line work.
  • Knowledge and application of the safety methods and equipment used when working with live electrical lines.
  • Ability to work around high voltage lines without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge, skill and ability in climbing poles and working at various heights.
  • Ability to apply basic math in making job-related calculations.
  • Ability to communicate with subordinates, BLW supervisors, and engineers to provide technical assistance, training, or make suggestions to simplify job and increase work quality and efficiency.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply all related code and specification manuals, including the APPA and National Electric Safety Codes.
  • Ability to understand and respond to written job orders and accurately interpret blueprints.
  • Must have a valid Georgia flagging certification, First Aid and CPR certification, or obtain within work test period.
  • Ability to obtain ITS certification within work test period.
