Job Description

Performs responsible un-skilled work in the collection of solid waste from residents and small businesses; does related work, as required.

Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a Sanitation Equipment Operator.

Essential Tasks

  • Empties roll-out carts into hopper of rear-packer truck using mechanical lifter mounted on the back of truck.
  • Steps up and rides on step mounted on rear of truck as truck moves from one location point to another, using hands and arms to hold on to truck while in motion.
  • Picks up bags, boxes, and bundles, not to exceed 50 pounds and places them in hopper of rear-packer truck.
  • Aids truck operator when backing the vehicle by giving signals or calling out and guides truck operator in congested areas.
  • Serves as a driver trainee, as required.
  • Assist in cleaning truck.
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned;
Qualifications
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor for long periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • High School Diploma or GED Preferred
Physical Requirements

Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and vendors.

Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when operating a motor vehicle or addressing an audience.
  • Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.
  • Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
  • Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point. Must be able to see a wide span of area.
  • Accommodation - Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly.
Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include:
  • Light Work
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or
    • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and
    • A negligible amount of force constantly to handle or move materials related to the position

    • The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.
    Environmental Conditions
    • Physical Surroundings
      • The Worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Worker is required to work in extremely hot and cold weather conditions as well as in the rain, sleet and snow. Combining the type of work performed with weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work constantly for extended periods of time while outside in various weather conditions. The position is best suited for someone who is accustomed to working in hot, cold, wet, dirty and sweaty conditions.
    • Hazards
      • Employee will be exposed to trash and garbage as well as various other items as discarded. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
    • Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment (which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work.)
      1. Lever operated mechanical lifters, two-way radio, telephone, mobile carts and Personnel Resolution.
