Our Streets and Stormwater Division is currently seeking a Sanitation Equipment Operator I or II depending on qualifications and experience, to operate equipment associated with the collection of solid waste from residents and small businesses; This role requires the ability to cover assigned routes, and other related work as required.
This position reports to a Sanitation Supervisor and will supervise assigned Sanitation Workers.

Essential Tasks

What You'll Do

  • Operate any one piece of equipment associated with the collection of solid waste, not limited to (automated side - loader, rear - loader, boom truck, swap - loader or front - end loader on assigned route;
  • Supervise a two-man crew in the collection of solid waste;
  • Reports violations of the solid waste ordinance to supervisor;
  • Drives trucks over prescribed route(s) to collect solid waste and properly dispose of material at the established disposal areas;
  • Conducts thorough pre-trip inspections and performs other routine preventative maintenance;
  • Cleans and properly maintains equipment;
  • Works as a productive member of a solid waste collection crew to remove refuse, yard waste, debris and junked furniture and appliances from roadsides;
  • Uses a mobile device to log work or infractions as needed for reporting purposes.
  • Answers questions from citizens regarding Environmental Services Division procedures and practices;
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Qualifications

Qualifications You'll Bring

Sanitation Equipment Operator I
  • Valid North Carolina Class B CDL Driver's License
  • A clean driving and safety record
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to direct activities of others working extended periods of time in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge of safety standards and the ability to ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Standards and Policies
Sanitation Equipment Operator II
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid North Carolina Class B CDL Driver's License
  • A clean driving and safety record
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to direct activities of others working extended periods of time in all weather conditions
  • Knowledge of safety standards and the ability to ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Standards and Policies
Physical Requirements
Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers which includes co-workers and citizens.
Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position

Environmental Conditions
Physical Surroundings
  • The Worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. Worker is required to work in extremely hot and cold weather conditions as well as in the rain, sleet and snow. Combining the type of work performed with weather conditions, the worker should be one who can work constantly for extended periods of time while outside in various weather conditions. The position is best suited for someone who is accustomed to working in hot, cold, wet, dirty and sweaty conditions.

Hazards
  1. Employee will be exposed to recycling and garbage as well as various other items as discarded. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment
  1. Automated side - loader, rear - loader, swap -loader -bulk truck and/or front -end loader; red and black boxes, green convenience site boxes, dumpsters, two-way radio, telephone, mobile carts and Personnel Resolution.
