Job Description

Do you have experience driving trucks? Have you ever thought about working for the Solid Waste Division? If so, the City of Burlington, Solid Waste Division is hiring an Equipment Operator I.

About us
The Solid Waste Division provides weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste collection, and bulk waste collection.

What you will do
Performs responsible skilled work in the operation of one piece of equipment i.e., rear loader, boom truck in the Solid Waste Division; requires ability to cover multiple routes for solid waste collection of trash or yard waste materials.

Expected Hiring Range: $ 40,319.62 - 42,335.60. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade.
Examples of Duties

  • Drives trucks over prescribed routes to collect yard waste (vegetative) and junk/trash from curbside.
  • Conducts thorough pre-trip/post-trip inspections and performs other routine preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • Cleans and property maintains equipment.
  • Employees could be assigned as a member of a; yard waste crew (vegetative), garbage collection crew or a bulk junk crew to collect items placed curbside for collection.
  • Cleans area around cans and picks up loose trash.
  • Assists with dumping solid waste at the landfill.
  • Works in a manner that ensures the safety of self and co-workers.
  • Operates CDL required vehicles as needed.
  • User of Mobile 311 device, to record locations for pickup and to report challenge areas.
  • Answers questions from citizens regarding Solid Waste Division procedures and practices
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the principle and practices of operating and serving one piece of equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and CDL regulations governing equipment operation
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary to properly operate Solid Waste equipment.
  • General knowledge of a variety of skilled maintenance and/or tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to perform manual work for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency, experience working outdoors
  • Valid NC Driver's license
Special Requirements
  • Class (A or B) CDL driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months of employment date. We will assist you with obtaining it if needed.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, feeling and repetitive motions.
  • Employees must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance. Must possess visual acuity to operate a Solid Waste collection vehicle and collect garbage and refuse.
