Position Summary
The Director of Energy Supply at CoServ oversees wholesale power and natural gas supply, leading a team to develop and execute energy supply and risk management strategies. Key duties include creating strategies for energy supply, managing hedging, and directing the Energy Supply team. The main goal is to minimize long-term energy costs while managing risk. Additional responsibilities involve monitoring the ERCOT market, optimizing processes, and supporting energy initiatives like distributed energy resources.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Responsible for establishing, executing, and optimizing strategies for wholesale electricity and natural gas hedging and procurement. Prepares and presents strategies and policies to senior leadership and the CoServ Board for approval, including energy supply plans for the next 1-5 years. Coordinates with the Energy Supply Governance Committee (ESGC) to make recommendations and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures. Provides leadership to the Energy Supply team, promoting a culture of innovation, collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement. Oversees the development and enhancement of analytical models to evaluate and forecast CoServ’s energy positions and purchasing needs, informing hedging strategies. Manages electric load forecasts and gas consumption forecasts; contracts with third-party vendors for forecasting tools, ensuring continuous improvement in forecast accuracy. Manages relationships with third-party advisors for power supply planning, forecasting, and procurement. Monitors ERCOT power and natural gas prices, market conditions, and industry developments to identify market dynamics and trends. Directs the evaluation of new renewable assets (solar, storage, etc.) or demand response programs as elements of CoServ’s power supply portfolio. Recommends, develops, and negotiates energy supply agreements, including EEI, ISDA, or NAESB master agreements and natural gas transportation and storage agreements, with credit-worthy counterparties. Identifies, negotiates, and implements long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for renewable or dispatchable energy supply. Directs the creation and continuous improvement of processes and tools to accurately monitor, report on, and forecast CoServ wholesale energy costs. Works with CoServ Accounting and Finance teams to ensure the appropriate administration of invoices, margin calls, and other payments or credits for counterparties, brokers, and ERCOT. Works with CoServ’s risk management staff to evaluate, quantify, and mitigate CoServ’s potential credit and risk exposure related to recommended energy supply plans. Periodically reviews CoServ’s risk management policies and recommends updates or changes to CoServ’s Energy Supply Committee and the Board. Monitors meetings, hearings, rules and regulations of regulatory authorities (ERCOT, PUC, RRC, legislature) for impacts on energy supply, distributed energy resources, etc. Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines. Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.
Secondary Position Responsibilities
Supports implementation of distributed energy resource programs that apply technology to reduce peak load and deliver value to CoServ’s residential and commercial customers, including developing business plans and economic cases: New programs may include demand response, renewable energy, energy storage, electric vehicles, and/or third-party products and services.
Manages the purchase, retirement, and/or sale of renewable energy credits (RECs) as needed. Works with CoServ’s legislative and regulatory advisors on matters impacting energy supply. Utilizes experience, knowledge, and analytical skills to support cost of service studies and development of new rates for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Assists other CoServ departments and personnel in matters concerning member service requests, rates, energy programs, and energy supply. Participates when and as assigned, on CoServ project teams for development of innovative technologies and services. Attend workshops, conferences, and outside meetings as required to monitor and stay informed about industry developments and trends, ERCOT market operations, new technologies, and other issues or decisions which might affect CoServ’s objectives and policies. Maintains and increases knowledge of applicable Texas and federal rules and regulations such as PURA, PUC Substantive Rules, and PURPA. Performs other duties and activities assigned. Direct reports include Energy Resources power and gas supply personnel (the Energy Supply team). Responsible for preparation of and has accountability for departmental budgets. Oversee interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding, and disciplining employees, resolving issues, and establishing work procedures to improve efficiency as it relates to the Energy Supply team. Ensures that all team functions are performed in a safe, efficient, and effective manner in accordance with standard utility practice, good business practices, applicable codes and regulations, and the rules and policies of CoServ. Ensures that all team personnel adhere to company procedures, standards, and policies for the safety and success of the employees and members. Position Requirements

MBA, or advanced degree in technical field. Experience Required
Ten or more (10+) years of business experience, including technology, engineering, analytics, product development, and/or business development. A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in retail or wholesale electricity market operations. A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience. Extensive experience in energy trading, risk management, or financial and/or electricity market analytics. Experience in multiple aspects of utility operations, such as power supply, finance, rate making, etc. Experience Preferred
