Overview of Position:
This is a senior management position that plays a core role. The Deputy Director coordinates the Staff Leadership Team and assists the Executive Director (ED) in their many duties. The Deputy Director will partner closely with the ED to chart NAMI Maryland’s future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s services. The Deputy Director is responsible for helping to set goals, develop and oversee action plans, finances and budgets, and monitor program and performance. The Deputy Director will also assist the ED in governance, strategic planning and development, external relations, and special projects, as appropriate. The Deputy Director may serve as Interim Executive Director in their absence, under the NAMI Maryland Leadership Contingency Plan. The Deputy Director leads by example while creating and maintaining a positive, collaborative, and inclusive work culture. Reports to:
Executive Director Salary Range:
$75,000-$95,000 The Deputy Director plays a key role in the ongoing strengthening and performance of the entire organization. This includes developing and supporting staff, interns and volunteers, membership, and financial management, and assisting with funding, budget development and external and internal partnerships. The Deputy Director will be responsible for managing a small team supporting overall operations. Strategic Planning:
Supports the ED in developing annual and long-term strategic plans and is involved in the development and implementation of action plans by those coordinating programs, projects and operations. The Deputy Director is responsible for overseeing action plan updates and reports, ensuring that all protocols and procedures are followed. Organizational Development:
Oversees the organization’s operations. Assists the ED and the Leadership Team in developing and strengthening the internal capacity to provide its mission work efficiently and effectively and to sustain itself over the long term, including relations with the national organization and NAMI affiliates in Maryland. Fundraising & Donor Development:
Collaborates with the ED in overseeing NAMI MD’s fundraising activities, by effectively garnering resources for the organization from philanthropic sources, including individuals, foundations, corporations, governmental agencies, and associations. NAMI Maryland and NAMI Affiliate Development and Relations:
Works closely with the ED to ensure that 1. NAMI Maryland works with NAMI MD affiliates to meet the NAMI National standards and all state legal and financial requirements 2. accurate and timely communications occur with NAMI National and local NAMI MD affiliates including such areas as State and Federal legislative activity, membership, events, fundraising, and leadership development and other information important to achieve the mission. Financial Management:
Partners with the ED in providing appropriate financial stewardship for the organization, including assisting in developing and monitoring an annual budget, financial policies and processes, and reporting including for grants and contracts. The Deputy Director, depending on interest and skills, may also be involved in: Representation and Advocacy:
Assists the ED in overseeing the organization’s participation in Federal, State and Local advocacy programs including participation in coalitions, statewide advisory committee meetings, education meetings, legislative workgroups and task forces. Works with the ED and the Policy team to visit State and Federal legislators, promote bills and provide testimony to committee hearings and briefings. Assists the ED in supervising the development of policy positions regarding legislation and regulation and other public policy activities that affect people with a mental illness. Board Development & Governance:
Attends Board and/or Board committee meetings as necessary, assists in developing Board reports from the ED, and actively participates in meetings with local affiliates in Maryland. Assists the ED to resource and educate the Board of Directors, individual board members, and board committees to properly fulfill their responsibilities, including education on governance duties and potential issues, NAMI’s structure and priorities and supporting NA. Assist with other projects and tasks, as assigned by the Executive Director. Qualifications Knowledge: Bachelor’s or higher degree (Business, Communications, Nonprofit Development, or related field is preferred but not required). Experience: 6-10-plus distinguished years in a senior management position in a nonprofit organization, foundation, or government agency. Demonstrated experience with nonprofit management including financial and operations, action planning and reporting, personnel and volunteer management, and other small nonprofit best practices. Track record delivering superior results, commanding respect, and assuming leadership roles. Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities. Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and good humor. Passionate about NAMI Maryland’s mission and impact. Skills: Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization skills specific to nonprofit management including finance and operations, personnel and volunteer management, and other small nonprofit best practices. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people – junior and senior, for-profit, and nonprofit, and from diverse backgrounds. Interpersonal communication skills in combination with experience with volunteers, committee work, and community leaders. Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings. Ability to work independently and on a team, but with a high regard for accountability and outcomes. Strong attention to detail. Self-starter, self-disciplined, can remain focused in the face of pressure, delivers against timelines, not intimidated by tasks/time limitations. Knowledge of mental illness issues as they relate to individuals with mental illness and their families. Spark, imagination, creativity.
