The opportunity
Our Media Relations team is seeking a Senior Media Relations Specialist, based in Houston, TX. Reporting to the Manager, Media Relations and Channel Marketing, this position will develop and execute strategic media relations strategies and plans to protect and enhance the reputation of TC Energy.
We are looking for someone who has knowledge of public policy and politics; a deep network of political, business and energy media contacts; and a solid understanding of today's communications landscape including the tools, platforms and technologies required to support reputation enhancement and management. Proven skills and capacity to manage crisis/issues, pitch stories, conduct background briefings and build alliances with journalists are key, as well as the ability to collaborate across communications, external relations and other corporate functions to assist with the execution of the media relations strategy.

What you'll do
- Provide expert assistance in developing and executing strategic media plans and strategies that influence, inform and contextualize issues important to TC Energy's operations and reputation
- Support crisis and emergency response, reputation and issues management
- Provide strategic communication consultation to business partners by using a solid understanding of partners' business to proactively provide media relations communications solutions
- Develop and maintain key media relationships, proactive media engagement and perform spokesperson duties as required
- Write for a variety of partners and audiences: media pitches, media responses, executive briefings, listening reports, event plans, speaking remarks, newsroom statements and updates, website posts, fact sheet/material development
- Media monitoring and reporting as required
- Media training, coaching and preparing subject matter experts for media opportunities
- Mentor and review the work of team members
- Support in the development and use of tools and templates
- Serve as a member of the on-call team which may require early morning, evening and weekend call outs
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-Secondary Education in a related field (i.e. communications, journalism, public relations, business)
- 6 years of related experience in media relationship management or demonstrated relationships with traditional media
- Proven experience in crisis management and working with senior leaders
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences and develop compelling narratives
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with social media, content management systems, databases and tools, including news release dissemination platforms
- Previous experience in the energy industry and understanding of the public policy landscape across North America
- Advanced Degree in a related field
This position requires candidates to:
- Occasionally be available for extended work hours outside of standard business hours, and callouts as needed
- This position will involve travel and overnight stays away from home (estimated up to 10% of work schedule during peak work periods)
- Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
